Victory gardeners sometime assume
that cabbage plants are.hard to kill
,and therefore do not handle them as
carefully as other plants. This is
Especially true at transplanting time,.
Of course, this is a mistaken idea, for
if cabbage plants are handled with
or, at'best will only make slow growth.
Cabbage plants can be transplanted
with safety even during dry weather
if they are set deep in the soil; that is,
with the soil level up to the first leaf,
as illustrated in the accompanying
Garden-Graph. Make the hole deep
. . . nature's jacket holds in tile good.
—Cook vegetables in boiling water
but no more than enough to prevent
burning,.

before their roots have taken hold.
_Cabbage plants properly handled, like
:any other plants, will be stronger
;growinvg as well as better able to with-
tand pests and diseases.
When setting out cabbage plants
from the seedbed only the strong
stocky plants should be used, because
litany of the weaker plants will not
withstand the shock of transplanting
enough to enable the roots to be set
straight down -without crowding, The
soil should be firmed well about the
roots to prevent the formation of air
pockets. Water the plants and protect
them from the snit for a day or two.
When transplanting is being done
during warm weather it is advisable
to shear off the tops of the leaves, as
illustrated. This aids in checking ex-
cessive evaporation of moisture. try a better cocoa today

Take a Tip: , I
1. Washable floor mats should be
washed in real soapy water that is
not 'very hot, The carpet must be
well-rinsed or else the washing will
merely serve to flush the dirt down
into the pile.
2. A rag rug that is washed will re-
main clean longer if dipped into a
thick 'starch solution. It will also
stay in a better position on the floor,
3, Make certain that "washed floor
mats are thoroughly dried before put-
ting back on the floor.

The Question Box:
Mrs. J. A. says: Household linens
will give longer wear if folded in dif-
ferent ways from time to time. This
saves constant creases in the same
places. If linen or washable clothing
becomes scorched during ironing, soak.
it at once in cold starch water. Wash

Mrs. S. T. says: If an omelet ge'ts

Hello Homemakers: Weddings are
lovely to remember. The wartime
wedding may have priorities but the
graceful aspects have not been restrict-
ed. The bride's dress has been left.,
it's graceful length and she maintains
the .right to have a traditional frosted
wedding cake.
There is more tea available, butter
may be extended and there's lots of
breads. Although .we may have to
skimp on the sugar if we make our
little cookies and .cakes successfully
for the, wedding luncheon.
Retaining such symbols and atmo-
sphere as seem significant to you,
don't hesitate to plan simply for a
wedding. Perhips shortness of notice
or uncertainty about leave for the
groom, will put anything elaborate
out of reach. However, with a gener-
al plan of a flexible sort made out,
complete with accurate lists of every-
thing ,from the guests to the punch
recipes, everything can go smoothly.
We've been making plans for a wed-
ding luncheon at home and of course
these foods arc uppermost in' my mind
to-day.
