Received Letter From The Sudan
Mr, and Mrs, E. H. Strong are in
receipt of a letter from Mr, Seymour
Gray, B. Sc, A, Dip: Agric. (Cantab)
A,LC,T.A„' who is an Inspector of

service. Seymour who his friends will
remember, worked at Me, Strong's
21/a years coming from England at the
age of151/2 years, arriving here in
May of 1930, His letter was dated
February 23 and was delivered here
on Jane 10, and contains an interest-
ings account of farming in the Sudan.
He tells of he and another engineer
laying out a 5000 acre track for an
irrigation system where big diesel
engines pump the water into a central
canal then into off-takes to the small
plots, 100 to the acre. All the grain
has to be sown by hand and the plots
banked up by hand and given a dose
of water separately every ten days.
The principal crops are wheat, cotton,
mullet and beans,' He says that cattle
improvement has not even been touch-
ed, breeds not even defined, pigs al-
most unknown and no two hens alike
and instead of horses the native power
is the bullock,. and he states that it
is quite a job trying to interest the
natives in hoeing.
