last week at Sarnia, returned home

Mr. John Beecroft received word
last week that his brother David, was
sick in a New York bospital,
Mrs. Jos. Holmes of Clinton, 'spent
the week-end at the home of her,
daughter, Mrs. Robert Laidlaw, and
Mr, Robt. Laidlaw of Galt, also spent
the week-end with his wife and family
here. -
Mr, Charlie Moore of Sarnia, spent
the week-end with his parents, Mr,
and Mrs. Arthur Moore,
Mr. and Mrs, Roy McInnis and
children of Toronto, spent the week-
end with her parents, Mr, and Mrs.
John Kennedy, Kinloss, and with his
relatives at Ripley. Miss Florence
Beecroft accompanied them and spent
the week-end with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. j, D. Beecroft.
Many will be interested to know
that Mr, -Gavin Middleton, a former
resident of Kinloss, has been in the
Hamilton Hospital suffering from a
stroke for the past five weeks,
Pte, Athol Puroda of Kingston and
Mrs. • Purdon and. Betty Anne of
Wingharn, visited on Sunday avith his
parents, Mr. and Mrs, A. E. Purdon.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stewart and
family of Lucknow, visited on Sunday
with Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Falconer.
Mr. George Ross of Owen Sound,
spent the week-end with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Ross.
The Easter Thank-offering meeting
of the W, M. S. of the United Church
was held on Thursday afternoon with
the Vice-President, Mrs. Jas. Falconer
in charge and giving the call to wor-
ship. Mrs. .Lott read the scripture
lesson on the Easter story, and Mrs,
Ezra Scholtz sang, In the Garden,
The story of the part that the people
of Africa took in the Crucifixion and
spreading the gospel was read by Mrs.
Beecroft. Mrs. Scholtz led in prayer
for. the missionaries. Mrs. J. A.
Ward then gave a very interesting
talk on her two years work as a nurse
in connection with the Fred Victor
Mission, Toronto, and received a
hearty vote of thanks. Mrs. Milian
Moore and Mrs. Scholtz gave the in-
teresting comments on the stories of
the Missionary Monthly and the meet-
ing was closed by the repeating of the
Mizpah Benediction,,
Mrs. Harold Spading and Douilas

Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. J. D. Beecroft and
Florence, visited With Mrs. Will Lyon,
and Miss Robina Kirk, Londesboro,
and with Mrs, B. Hall, Blyth, on Fri-
day.
The people of the 9th Con, of East
Wawanosh, held a Red. Cross dance
in the school on Tuesday and drew
the lucky ticket on the "Around. the
World Quilt", which has. been on ex-
hibit in Mr. H. Fryfolgle's window in
Wingham.
Miss. June Irwin, Toronto, spent the
week-end at the home of her parents,
Mr. and ,Mrs. Herson Irwin.
Many in this community were sur-
prised to hear of the passing of Mrs,
Eli Jacques, at the home of, her son,
Mr. George Jacques of Preston, on
Saturday. A life-long resident of this
community, Rachel Lamont, she mar-
ried Mr. Eli Jacques and they settled
on the farm now owned by Mr. Wal-
ter Lott. They had three sons,
George; with whom they resided for
the past few weeks, and -Wilfred of
Sudbury, and John predeceased them
over twenty years 'ago. She was in
her 87th year. The funeral was held
from the Presbyterian Church, White-
church, on Tuesday afternoon to the
Wingham Cemetery, with her pastor,
Rev, G. H. WilSon in charge of the
services. Besides her aged husband,
two sons, she leaves to mourn her
seven grandchildren. This community
extends sympathy to the bereaved
family.

Junior Red Cross Made Afghan
The Junior Red Cross Society of
Sluevale School•held its Easter meet-
ing on the afternoon of April 22nd,
the president, Irene Hall, presiding,
The secretary, June Shiell, and treas-
urer, Bill Gallaher, presented reports.
A donation of $2.25 was voted to the
Chinese Relief, Choruses were sung
by Junior and Senior classes. Audrey
Mann sang a solo and June Shiell and
Mary Darling a duet, with guitar ac-
companiment' by Muriel Smith. Jim-
my Darling gave a recitation and
readings were given by Delores Ham-
ilton, Muriel Smith and Mary Darling.
The members have completed a knit-
ted afghan and donated it to the Cana-
dian Red Cross.
Held Easter Service
At the morning service in the Unit-
ed Church, Rev. Campbell 'Tavener
used "Christ the Open Door" as the
subject for his Easter message. A
suitable anthem was sung by the choir
and Mrs. Jack Wickstead sang a solo.

The Red Cross Society held a con-
cert in the :Institute Hall her on
Thursday evening last week, with Jas,
Laidlaw as chairman. The Jr. Red
Cross assisted the program and Tiffin
Bros. provided the music for the
dance that followed. During the even-
ing Ann McInnis drew for the lucky
ticket on the quilt made and donate'd
to the Society by Mrs. Duffy, Mrs.
A. E. Purdon was the holder of the
lucky ticket. Mrs. Duffy realized $12
for her quilt.

spent the week-end with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Robt, Purdon.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy McGee of To-
ronto, spent Friday with their parents

of Brandon, are spending their two
weeks holidays with relatives here and
at St. Helens.
Pte. Alfred Mason, who has spent
his two weeks furlough with his par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Mason, re-
turned to :Camp Borden on Sunday,
and Lloyd Mason of R.C.0,C, and
Miss ;Mavis Newell, Wingham, also
visited there, over the week-end.

Handkerchief Exbibition Interesting
George Thomson presided' at the
weekly meeting of the Y. P. U. at the
'United. Church.. The scripture lesson
was read by Miss Margaret. Curtis.
The hymns sung were in keeping with(
the Easter season. The report of the
secretary-treasurer was presented by
Miss Emma Johnston, The subject
of "Hobbies" was dealt with by .Mrs,
C, Tavener, Over twenty responded
to a roll call naming their favourite
hobby, Collections of different kinds
were popular, stamps, cooking recipes,
movie star pictures, picture post cards
and perhaps the most interesting was
a collection of handkerchiefs, exhibited
by Miss Emma Johnston, showing
handkerchiefs from Java, Mexico,
Australia, Florida, Japan, San Fran-
cisco, England, Scotland, Canada and
the, other places.
Y. P. S. To Hold Debate
The Young People's Society of
Knox Presbyterian Church is meeting
this week on Thursday instead of
Tuesday evening. The main feature
of the meeting will be a debate, "Re-
solved that is is easier for a girl to
be a Christian than for a boy", Flem-
ing Johnston, Harold•Elliott, Jean Mc-
Lennan and Jean Elliott will be the
debaters.
