of the time people waste when a little

Grandfather was an tenet at greas-

thatonly a very small amount would
squeeze out when you put the wheels

Rubber Life.rafts Being Mad3 in Canada
INFLATED, READY FOR !,TSE AND RIGHT SIDE UP WITHIN 60 SECONDS
A. W. Denny, Goodyear Factory
Manager, opens the valve which
inflated the first Canadian -made
Goodyear rubber life -raft. Iden-
tical in principle with the famous
rubber raft that kept alive Captain
Rickenbacker and his plane crew,
the Goodyear model looks much
like a soldier's duffle bag before
it is opened, and is tucked away
near the pilot where he can quickly
seize it in case of an emergency
landing over water. Once in the
water, all he has to do is pull a cord
and the boat is inflated, ready for
use and right side up within 60
seconds.
• #
Second picture shows what bap -
pens: inside the duffle bag a gas
"bottle" rapidly releases CO, gas
when the cord is pulled. This gas
feeds into the chambers of he
raft, forces off the dome -fastened
cover of the bag, and the raft opens
up in much the same way as an
artificial Chinese flower. Two
sectional mire are easily assembled.
In the side pockets of the life-
raft are a hand pump, a repair
outfit, first aid it, emergency food
and water rations, sea markers and
smoke grenades. The raft itself is
a bright yellow color to attract the
attention of rescuers.
• a •
Third picture shows boarding
the raft which requires the same
care and dexterity required get-
ting into a canoe from thewater.
The airman grabs the opposite side
of the raft and throws himself
across the boat,from which posi-
tion the boarding operation is
comparatively easy.
tours. Suchansuch, our collie pup was on full feed at the end of ten days,
earnestly investigating all the ground The proportion of protein, minerals

be increased while nursing.
in •one respeet milk is not a com-
plete food—it does not contain iron,
yet iron is as essential for n
growth as milk. Under natural far-
rowing conditions outside, pigs are
able to supply themselves with iron..
When farrowed inside it must be giv-
en in some other way. One of the
best and simplest ways is to give clean
sods in a creep where the young pigs
canget it without being disturbed by
the sow. If earth or sods are not
available chemical iron may 'be given
instead. Either reduced iron or iron
sulphate (copperas) is satisfactory. A
feed of iron is the amount that an
be held easily on a ten -cent piece. The
first feed of iron should he g' en
when the pigs are one er two days
old and it should be repeated once
each week. Once pigs are eating solid
food freely, the feeding of iron no
longer is necessary. Iron is a food
not a medicine. Without it the pigs
become pale and shivery, the signs
of anaemia Many are stunted perm-
anently and some maybe lost. A sup-
ply of iron should be laid in or ord-
ered right away as it may be hard to
get later.
Pigs cannot thrive on milk alone.
Grunter, our discontented Berk -
sire -was probably the closest to being
happy that she has ever been. A pool
,of muddy watet served her as a luxur-
iant wallowing place and she wallow-
ed -until she looked like some frightful
monster out of a picture -book.
Spring has come to our concession.
Neighbor Higgins came up from the
sugar bush with a load of sap-backete
and other equipment. He is dosing
up for another year. The sap run is
over! The Barred Rock hens have
started dusting themselves again in
the flower beds and we are groning
used to seeing Mrs Phil come stet -m-
ing .out of the house with a dust cloth
over her head and a broom in her
band she irightens the nuisances
away„
IRON IS ESSENTIAL
FOR GROWTH OF PIGS
There IS usually no need to stimu-
late milk production by 'teary feeding
of the sow for a week or ten clays
after farrowing, During the first day
the sow should be given tepid water,
or :Skim milk- enly. Starting with a,
very thin Slop, its thiclmese should be

Both for their own good and 014 of
the sow, they should be •encouraged
to eat feed as soon as possible. If a
corner of the pen is boarded off and
some dry feed placed in a small
trough in the corner so the pigs can
get it without being disturbed by the
sow, they will usually begin to eat
when quite young. Creep feeding
helps to reduce the effect of weaning
and helps to keep the sow in better
