London, — Eighteen Canadian Sol-
diers has been commended in Can-
adian Army routine orders for dis-
tinguished conduct when the ship in
which they were crossing the Atlantic
was damaged in a collision.\ The
troopship waslorced to leave thecon-
voy because the captain feared the for-
ward bulkheads of chain lockers might
give way. When volunteers were
'called to help brace up the bulkheads,
the 18 Canadians responded,

Roof 'Collapsed 'Four Killed
Another convoy gets through to Malta with vital
-supplies and reinforcements. Pictured ABOVE is
14 crowd gathered on the bastions of Grand Harbor,
Waite, to cheer the' ships, first of which appears in
the foreground. For three days this convoy was th
target of massed air, sea, and submarine attacks, ill
arrival at Malta being announced by the Brit*
admiralty, August 14.

Fire in a barn owned by Hugh A.
Cameron on the—Huron-Kincardine
counties boundary line, completely
destroyed the structure along with six
cows, five calves'and 30 pigs. Imple-
ments and crops were also a total loss.
It was believed to have been caused
by spontaneous combustion.
Oldest Kincardine Resident Passes
Oldest resident of Kincardine, Mrs.
Rolson Rinker, died Thursday after a
brief illness._ She was in her hun-
dredth year. On February 7 last she
observed her 99th birthday.
Pay For Council Vote
Residents of Goderieh will vote on
Monday, December 7, as to whether
they are in favor of paying the mem-
bers of the Town Council a "reason-
able'!„ remuneration for their services.
No amount will be stated and only an
expression of opinion is sought.
Exeter Doctor Starts 100th. Pear
Canada's oldest practising physician,
Dr. J. W .Browning, Exeter, cele-
brated his 99th birthday on Saturday-,
He has practised at Exeter for 74
yeare. • Dr. Browning is the country's
oldest physician both in years and in
practise. For the past few years he
has conducted a consulting practise
only.
Four Sons Overseas
Mrs, Robert Ritchie received a cable
on Saturday from her son, Signm.
Emmerson Ritchie telling of his safe
arrival in England, Four of Mrs.
Ritchie's five sons are now overseas.
Pte. Leslie Ritchie has been overseas
since July of last year; Gnr. Fletcher
Ritchie has been overseas since Sep-
tember, 1941; Gm. Clayton Ritchie

Porker* Chased Girls
On Monday night, when a dozen
young village maidens were returning
home from a social evening at a home
west of the depot, they were charged
by a -800 pottod porker, which met the
party tear the foundry.. Alarming
screams broke upon the midnight air,
as the girls took to their heels with
their assilant in hot pursuit, Up on
House verandahs and down again it
chased them for several blocks.—Mild.

Ceiling Salary For Teachers
Keeping in line with the policy
of ceiling prices, Kincardine board of
education gave approval to maximum
wartime salaries for women public
school teachers. For the duration
these will be $1,000, the board ruled.

Listowel May Buy Arena
A movement is now under wav
whereby the Town of Listowel will
take over the ice arena. For some
time members of the .council have felt
that something along this line should
be done, and when they held a special
meeting to hear the report of Conn-
, cillor Howard McKenzie and Coun-
cillor W. D. Burns, who had been
named to interview Henry Opfer, the
owner of the rink, regarding tax ar-
rears, they put their stamp of approval
on the idea,
Clinton Doctor Promoted
Major Frederick G. Thompson, Lon-
don, has been appointed to the com-
mand of London Military Hospital in-
the rank of acting lieutenant-colonel; it
was announced at district military'
headquarters. Colonel Thompson serv—
ed in the ranks in the last war; and.:
was graduated from the University ofi
Western Ontario Medical 'Salta
1924. 'He practised in Clinton troth
entering the R.C.A_M.C. iii 1939. He
served overseas in this war returning
a short time ago.
Unlucky 13 —
Friday the 18th was unlucky for at
least one citizen of Walkerton, in the;
person of Mrs. Joseph A. Lambertus;,
who during the evening of the hoodoo
day suffered a broken hip when she-
fell on the walk near her borne on' the
