Visitors to French Canada are als
ways impressed with the gallic habit
of vivacity at table. Mealtimes should
be happy times when the family sits
down in amiable sociability. Eupeptic
is the word for it—and worth a trip
to the dictionary. At mealtimes, don't
worry about unpaid bills, scold the
children, or gnaw on bones of conten-
tion. All the vitamins in the world
won't help you or cYour children if the
occasion is so unhappy as to impair
digeStion. Warm up that gloomy, cold:
potato atmosphere.
Other Don'ts
Don't spoil mealtime by forcing the
children to eat. If a child is seriously
underweight there is likely enough an
organic cause for it, and it is wiser to
consult your physician. Perhaps he's
too, excited with life to feel like set-
tling down to a meal: after all, life is
pretty exciting to youngsters whose
genial currents have not been frozen
by the anfractuosities of life! Or the
child may be a bit upset or too tired.
Let him alone: scolding or nagging
won't help and may make him so re-
sentful that he may go on a partial
hunger strike.
Spiking The Appetite
Appetites are sure to decline if you
serve the same dishes over and over
again. It's too easy to fall into the ha-
bit of always serving the identical
conibination of dishes—such as cold
slaw with stew or pan potatoes with a
roast. For a change accompany stew

TAKE SPECIAL CARE
RUBBER DRIVE BELTS
Belting is a part of farm equipment
which requires special attention under
present conditions. A good deal of
rubber belting is used. on the farm and
W. Kalbfleisch, Agricultural Engine-
er, Central Experimental Farm, Otta-
wa, suggests that it would bd advis-
able to make every effort to keep rub-
ber belting away from oil, grease and
where possible sunlight and heat, in
order to keep it in the best condition.
He also suggests keeping a lookout
to avoid abrasions and excessive load-
ing, which may destroy a rubber belt
in a short time. Belt dressing, he says,
should only be used when a belt is
slipping in the pulley, If dressing is
required continuously then the belt is
being overloaded or the pulleys on the
machine are too small or are improp-
erly lagged to give the belt sufficient
surface to carry the load. While it may
not be possible to keep belts out of
direct sunlight when being used, they
should be protected when not in use.
Where belts are not endless and re-
quire a fastener or connection, this
part of the belt is the weakest link.
Fastenings should be square, the belt
ends cut accurately, and the location
of the punch holes for lacing or the
clinching of rivets or prongs, must be
just right.
To prevent edge wear of the belt,
shafts should be kept parallel and the
belt in line: Trying to hold belts on
pulleys by guide stakes is damaging.
Should a strip of fabric break loose
from the main body of the belt it can
be repaired with rubber cement. The
surface of the body of the belt should
be cleaned with a-wire brush to expose
a fresh surface, The same treatment
should he given the loose strip, Then
apply the cement. Allow it to dry for a
few minutes, then stretch the loose
strip as it is laid in the belt and clamp
the repaired part between two boards
until the cement is set.
Take care of machinery belts as it
is going to be almost impossible to re-
place them for a long time, advised
Mr. Halbfleisch.

THE LUSCIOUS TOMATO
Referring to foods, the sun-ripened
tomato grown in this country is a gen-
eral favourite among Canadians. Its
greater popularity during the past few
years, evidenced by the large increase
in consumption of tomato products,
is due in part to an awakened apprec-
iation of the food value of the tomato,
as well aas to the fact that its uses
