EFFORTS BEING MADE
TO CONTROL DISEASES
Warnings that we must expect epi-
demics of infectious diseases are being
given by medical authorities, who
point to the influenza epidemic of the
last year of World War No. 1 as an
example of what may be expected.
Some medical writers suggest that
-enforcement of certain precautionary
measure, difficult to achieve in peace-
time, become more feasible in war-
time, In ordinary times, universal en-
forcement ,they point out, falls by the
wayside because of indifference, care-
lessness and lack of a common spirit
of co-operation.
An example of this, they indicate, is
smallpox vaccination. Nobody knows
how large an unvaccinated population
we have. Health boards try to enforce
it, with indifferent success. Every
once in a while, when smallpox bhaks
out in a certain community, we are
shocked to find that a large proportion
of the population is unprotected.
The same situation applies to uni-
versal typlibid innoculation; and in its
current program for Toxoid Week,
the Health League of Canada is en-
deavouring to bring diphtheria under
effective control.
