energy to muscles, tissues and glands, If

poison. You become constipated, stomach and
kidneys can't work properly. The whole system is affected and you feel "rotten," head- - achy, backachy, dizzy, tired out-a ready prey for starless and disease.

SUGAR RATIO NS
The storm struck just after dinner
Mrs, Phil was washing the dishes and
I was reading the newspaper, There
was the headline about the rationing
of sugar. It seemed that just as the
headline came into sight everybody on.
the party-line started to call up' their
neighbors. They all seemed disturbed
by the announcement that tea would
have to go short on Sweetening.
Our ring came in-,"three longs and
two shorts"-and when the receiver
was lifted you could easily hear the
din in all parts of the room. Gradually
order was restored on 'the line When
Mrs, Higgins, whose voice carries es-
pecially well, cut htrough the noise..
"Look here," came her voice, "All the
chattering and jibbering isn't getting
anybody any place. In the first place
I was using this telephone and all the
rest of you started ringing in on The,"
There was a huffed silence after that
for a few seconds but the noise soon
started up again.s
• Mrs. Phil got on the line again and
I could. hear occasional words such as
"What about baking?"'. .. "Dear me!"
: • . "You would think the government
would have laid in a supply of sugar.",
. • . "Maybe we could grow sugar
beets .and squeeze the sugar out of
them.",
There was a worried dook in Mrs.
Phil's eye as she came away from the
telephone. "Only thats little bit of •sug-
ar for each person and Aunt Phoebe
coming to visit us next.week. She puts
in a cup of sugar for every cup of tea
she drinks." My suggestion that she
mix a little salt with the sugar for,

Take A Tip:
1, If a broom gets out of shape,
wet it in boiling water and place flat
on the floor with a weight on it until
dry,
2. To prevent mattress • or sheets
from being torn, bind the sharp edges
of bed springs with adhesive tape.
3. When making sheets have them
one yard longer and wider than the
bed.
4. If your window shades pull a-
way from the rollers, put a piece of
adhesive tape along the end over the
tack holes, then drive in the tacks that
hold the blind.

QUESTION BOX

Anne Allen invites you to write to
her c/o The Advance-Times. Just
send in your questions on homemaking
problems and watch this little corner
of the column for replies.
Aunt Phoebe so as to make it go
farther and at the same time cure her
'tendencies towards having so much
sugar fell on deaf ears. She was lost
in contemplation of sugarless days.
The communications from the bat-
tle front came pouring in all day. Mrs.
Higgins discovered that Murphy's
store was sold, out of sugar. Cousin
Oscar, the mail with the money on
the Twelfth Sideroad ,was seen going
home with a 'bag in the' buggy. The
bag was all covered with a blanket and
everybody was convinced it was su-
gar. Some had a notion for calling the
police.
The sugar-war was too much for
a mere man to stand. I decided to go
out for a walk back to the bush. Our
year's supply of wood has not been
cut yet and it appears as if I am going
to have to clean up some fallen trees
and 'haul them. up to the barn and
"buzz' 'them for next winter's fuel
supply. Ist,.ks impossihie to hire a man
to' go into the bush and work these
days.
The snow crunched under foot with
the rasp of the frost. The ,sun had a
February glint to it and a certain
warmth when you stood on the shady
side a a little knoll just east of the
bushy A rabbit scanipered out, and
went hippety-hopping across the snow.
A partridge flattened in obscurity as
she heard the footsteps. on the snow.
It took several minutes to discover. her
outline against the partially rotted
stump.
Then. I saw it. A bee tree that was;
marked out last forgot-
ten!
,Fall and then rgot-
ten! There it loomed up as a potential,
source of sugar supply. Black and for-
bidding in appearance, that tree has,
untold wealth in the way of honey.
As happy as if I had discovered a,
buried hoard of gold I went back to•
the house. Mrs. Phil had a number of
paper sacks on the table figuring out
the amount of sugar on hand. She was-
lamenting at the same time the fact
that during Lhe previous week she
hadn't bought the hundred-pound sack:
of sugar as she had intended.
She scarcily heard me when I asked:
if honeir was any good for. baking.
Then it dawned on her and she look- •
ed up 'smiling, "I know what you're-
thinking about, but honey is too dear
to buy. Besides we don't want to do,
anything that will be unpatriotic.",
,However, one of these nights I
think we'll cut down the bee tree ants
it will be a patriotic act becattie it Wilt
help to conserve the sugar supply. •
Jersey, so soft and clinging, is a
beautiful fabric for the slim little after-
noon dress. This charming frock is in
chalky powder blue silk jersey with
a cluster of embroidered cherries on
the bodice for a bold color' contrast.
It has a high, round baby neck with
radiating gathers. The hip yoke is
gathered into a knot at the waist.
Gathers from the hip yoke go all the
way around the back, but stop short
at centre front The dress closes in
back with a slide fastener.

Breakfast in Winter
Hello Homemakers! Both children
.and grown-ups should have a good,
wholesome breakfast - to work, to
play, and to enjoy life. So, let's check
up on some of our breakfast habits.
* * * *
That "no breakfast" habit so many
of es bemoan is usually the result of
doing without breakfast - or skimp-
ing on it - through lack of time.
RUSH is responsible for too many of
our dietary and general health troub-
les. Why not firmly resolve to take
at least twenty minutes to eat an ad-
lequate breakfast? It's really worth it.
* * * * *
Even those who eat plenty of break:
fast should guard against menus that
are monotonous. Remember, variety is
said to be' the "%Dice" of life. Others,
whose work does not involve a great
amount of exercise, are apt to indulge
