Fortner Carrick Man Pined
Rudolph Babel, of Hamilton whose
parents eatne from Germany and re.
sided on the 6th concesison of Carrick
for quite a number of years, was fined

He failed to register -as att enemy alien
at the outbreak of the war because he
said he wanted to be free to' roams but
be later gave himself up to the Royal
Canadian Mounted Polite because he
wanted to settle down, in Hamilton
and be married, He pleaded guilty to
a breach of the Defence 'of Canada
Regulations in failing _to register: He
was fined $50 or one month in jail.
A $5.00 fine was also imposed when
he admitted a charge of neglecting to
notify the authorities of a change of
address under the provisions of the
National Registration Act,
Vendome Hotel, Teeswater, Closed
Following the announcement of last
Friday's majority vote for the "drys",
Mr. Alex. tambertus turned the key
in the Vendome Hotel, and it ceased
to be a public "house," The proprietor
has pointed out that 'financial returns
from traveling trade will not even
meet expenses, therefore it 18 'better
he close it up as a hotel.—Teeswater

Listowel Man Killed
Floyd Sleernan, of tistawel, was.
instantly killed, when he was thrown
from the car in which he was riding
after it collided with a truck near Fer-
gus, Sleema.n was a passenger
car .allegedly driven by Pred Rabb,
of Mount Torest, which was ,proceed-
ing in anOrtherly &red:thin, The truck,
loaded with lturtber, was approaching
from the opposite direction and was
driven by Henry Weber, aged 34,. of
Mildmay. According to police, the
Robb car was the third in a string of
three, and it was while Robb was at-
tempting to pass that the mishap oc-
curred. Meat-tan was thrown under
the back wheels of the truck and died
of head injuries and possible internal
hurts,
Dungannon Visitor's House Robbed
William Alton is on the staff of
teachers in the city of Toronto. lie is
a native of the Dungannon district and
for that reason appreciates getting
home for the Christmas Season. This
year however; he didn't -enjoy his trip
home. When he arrived with Mrs.
Alton ana, son Douglas, he was told
that the Toronto police had called to
inform hint that thieves had ransack-
ed his home. He had to return at once
.to the City,
Missing Airman Son of
Ooderkh Couple
Sergeant William Henry Baker, re-
ported missing officially, is the Son of
Mr. and Mrs. William Baker, Goder-
ich, His wife resides hi Montreal, He
went overseas with the ItC,A.V. He
was 'for a time on the staff of the
Goderich branch of the Royal Bank
after his gratulation front the Goderich
Collegiate Institute.
Turnkey White Dies,
Murder Charge Vollowed
The remains of Kearwood Welling-
ton White, turnkey of Huron County
jail, whose 'death occurred in the
General Hospital, Toronto, on Christ-
mas* Day, rested at Brophey's funeral
chapel until Sunday' when the funeral
took place from St. George's Anglican
Church, Rev, Mr. Graham, of Bay-
field, officiated. Interment was made
in Maitland Cemetery,
Mr. White died 11 days after he
was injured while preventing the es-
cape of. a prisoner said to be John
Vlanniken, V, who was being held for
theft of an automobile. Authorities say
Plannikett will now be charged with
murder,
It is alleged that Illarmiken hit the
turnkey Over the head with a hammer.
,Mr. White was rushed to Toronto for
an emergency operation when X,rayi
taken at the Godericlt 'hospital show-
ed art chess had formed on the brain.
Mr. White WAS beta hi 'Whitehall,
SirrICOe County, 43 years ago, the son
of Williiam and Dorothy Miller White.
He came to Goderich 17 years ago and
was employed by the Goderich Manu-
facturing COntparly for three 'years.
For the past 14 years he was turnkey
of the jail. He was married in Hunte-
vMe to Miss Irene Cole, of Clinton,
before coming here. He was a mem-
ber of St, George's Anglican Church.
Besides his mother in Stroud, he is
survived by his widow and seven
children.
Clinton Principal Resigns
The Clinton Board of Education has
been tendered the resignation of the
Collegiate Institute principal, Ed-
mund A Fines, 11,A„ who has been
on the teaching staff for the past 15
years sand principal for the past 10
years.

Curios Destroyed
Eire which broke out in the t arage
at Col. V, P. Hunter's residence in
tipper Town, and better known, as
"The Hedges" did considerable money
damage to say nothing of the value
of much of tbe contents Welt 'had
been collected In alkoarts of the Far
East during the 430-odd years Colonel
Hunter had spent there in service with
the Indian Army. The blaze is roughly
estimated at approximately $5„000o but
this is the actual 'value only and has
•no bearing on the sentimental value
of the articles destroyed. Durham

Huron Libraries Buy $350 of Books
The Library Association newly
formed in Huron has received $350
worth of new books which go immed-
iately into circulation to the 14 Mem-
ber libraries, The books inclUde fie-
flan, non-fiction and juvenile and will
be exchanged four times a year, giv-
ing each library that much inereased
reading matter. Miss Rose Aitken, of
Goderich, librarian, will be the dig.
