1979 has been proclaimed by the General
Assembly of the United Nations as In-
ternational Year of the Child. Member
nations will be taking a critical look at the
conditions under which their children are
growing up. Special programs and events
will be planned related to these concerns.
The year of the Child should be of special
interest to those in this community. This is a
rural area and nowhere else is a family as
closely involved in family life as those on the
farm. Farming is one place where children,
from an early age participate in the family
business. As adults, we must all try to
improve an atmosphere of love, under-
standing and encouragement, whether we
are parents, or farmers, or not, for the
children of our community. We should strive
to give children the chance to grow up in
warm, freincliy surroundings. "Listen tothe
children." Organizations are urged to take
the opportunity to become actively involved
in childrens programs. In that way we may
endeavour to bequeath a better world to our
Canadian children.

Winter brings a rash of accidents that is
blamed on the winter weather. The Ontario
Safety League tells us that more often the
real culprit, in most cases, is the driver who
does not adjust to cold weather conditions.
Some of the faults are too fast felt. driving
conditions, abrupt turns, limited visibility,
poor traction. Defensive driving and proper
care of your vehicle is what is needed, Take
it slow and easy from start to stop is the trick
to winter driving.

Many of us who cannot fly away to laze
away the winter under sunny skies dread the
cold, ice and snow. Then there are those who
have impatiently awaited just such weather -
the skiers. The Canadian Ski Annual Report

in spectacular jumping, and at her,
competitions. There are the hot sic& skier's
daring performances, and cross-country
skiing. The whole family, adults and
children alike, can, and do, join in the winter
fun of skiing.

My mistress went away for Christmas and
left me, Sheba, here in a dog's boarding
cage. How could my beloved lady do such a
thing to me? There I lie hiding my head in
my paws whimpering in my loveliness with
no one to comfort me. Oh Iam well cared for
fed, watered and let out for' runs, but that
does not make up for not having her talk to
the, pet and play with me. I am so lonely I
cannot eat. She said she would be back soon
to get me but I wonder if she really will. My

came back. If she does not come scion, or
