BY MRS. JOE WALKER
An event of historic interest took place
on Saturday, Dec. 2, when Mrs.. Stephen.
Byles of London presented the Bluevale
United Church with the silver trowel used by
her grandfather, Edward Luch, in laying a
cornerstone of the newly-built Methodist
Church in 1890.
Edward Leech was the third eldest of the
ten famous Leech brothers, pioneer
builders in, this district. Joseph Leech built
the first mill and mill dam in Bluevale in
1856. He built and resided in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Donald Street, formerly, the Duff
residence, purchased from him in 1905 15y
Robert Duff who succeeded him as miller.
Mr. and Mrs. Byles, their son and
daughter-in-law of Hamilton were
introduced to the guests by Rev. Wilena
Brown.
Mrs. Byles recalled visiting the home of

Wilena Brown dedicated the
new Bible to the glory of God'
and it was received by W.J.

session, on behalf of the
congregation.
During the service, the
second Advent candle was lit
after scripture reading from
the new Bible. MisS Brown's

her great uncle, Joseph Leech, as a child and
was happy to recall memories of that time.
She brought with her a printed history of the
illustrious family. This book, along with the
old Huron County Atlas (1879), press
clippings and pictures of the Leech fin4ly
were of much interest to those presentAffs.
Byles is the former Pearl Code, a sister to
Mrs. Dr. R.L. Stewart of Wingham.
The trowel is beautifully engraved with
the names of Joseph and Edward Leech and
the date 1890. Mrs. Byles presented a
similar trowel to the United Church at Gorrie
where the former Methodist church had also
been dedicated by her family.
The Bluevale Community Hall is now built
on the site of the Methodist Church and rests
on the original foundation.
Ladies of the congregation served tea and
refreshments and a pleasant informal visit
was enjoyed by everyone.
