Royal Canadian' Legion spon-
sors an essay and poem
convetitien. in connection
with Remembrance Day. The
following are the winning
entries from last year.
Why I wear A Poppy
Why do we wear poppies?
What is so special about
November the Eleventh?
Why did • they sign the
armistice? Why did they sell •
poppies? What are veterans?
Where does the money go?
What is the poppy a symbol
of? All these questions cocu.r
to me as Remembrance Day
approaches.
We wear poppies to maybe
show people that we re-
member the war vetrans so
that we can donate money to
help the people who were in.
the war and. their depend,.
November the eleventh is
SO special because it is the•
day that world leaders signed
an armistice on the eleventh
day of the eleventh month at
the eleventh hour. They did.
this to end the first world. war.
which was supposed to end
all. wars.
They signed the armistice
because they thought that it
might make the world more
civil i 7.ed and that it might
end all of the•wars. Did they
succeed.
We sell poppies because:
we wants to raise money for
the war veterans so they
might be able to make more
poppies or. for the . hospital
things that they ,might need.
- Veterans arc people who
fought in the war and were.
lUcky :enough "to come back
'home - again'. Some of these
men might have already died
or arc likely still in the
hospital with serious wounds,
which make them unable
support themselveS or their
families.
The. money. might go to
where 'ever it is needed. At
least, we know it is being
esed wisely by the authority
of the Canadian Legion.

The poppy is a symbol of
the tragedy of war and of the
renewal of life because the
battlefield was blooming
with poppies when they
fought. It should also be a
symbol of the peace we all
work for and hope for..
Charmaine Dobson
The Poppy
"We wear this poppy scarlet
red.
For who? For what? "I
said.
For all the men who are
dead?
Yes, But also for those sick
4) bed.
We wear this poppy for all
who've cried.
Over sons who have died.
For sorrow they can not
hide.
Many have failed,
although they tried.
We wear this poppy to
show we care,
For our love we want to
share,
With all those people who
do bear
Their sorrows that seem
unfair.
We wear this poppy. Why?
What for?
To show to all those men
who bore
The pains and sorrows of
the war,
We hope those pains we'll
have no more.
