Although the orchard is a lot of work Blake finds a lot of enjoyment in it as well. "Certainly if you have a good crop it's an enjoyment it's an accomplishement," He said. Maitside Orchard The Mait-Side Orchard in Brussels however is a little older then Mr. Blake's orchard having been here for approximately 75 years now. Lewis Cardiff is the present owner of the orchard where they grow approximately 10,000 bushels of apples and have the storage facilities for that many as well. There are approximately 2700 trees in the orchard and the kinds of apples grown there include Macintosh, Delicious, Spys, Wealthies, Gravensteins, Ida Reds, Russets and Snows. His apples are sold to local stores, people from both in and out of town and to outlets inn Kitchener. Mr. Cardiff also makes cider and apple butter most of which is sold, to local customers. Approximately 2500 gallons of cider is pressed by Mait-side Orchards in a season. About 15 people are employed to work at Mait-Side Orchards during the peak of the picking season which starts in mid- September and ends about the 30th of October. Then there arc about three employess who work, year round and in the winter that means grading and packing the apples. Except for the actual picking of the apples almost every other function at the orchard is automated. The bins ot apples arc picked up with a. forklift a qd deposited in the storage facilities in the same manner. Mr: Cardiff has 500 bins which will ,hold approximately 18 bushels of apples. Hunters think safety Once again the hunting season is here. The Ontario Provincial Police Force re- minds you that there are several basic gun-handling rules. H u ntinp, accidents claim about 125 lives each war. usually because the most simple rules have been broken. What can you do? * Never consume alcohol before or during a hunt. * Know the identifying fea- tures of the game you intend to hunt: * Never shoot in the direction of buildings or livestock. You cannot depend on the common sense of the hunter beside you—wear bright orange. The handling of firearms requires great care. *Always handle a gun as if it Were loaded. *Never climb a tree or fence with a loaded firearm. Always carry your gun so that you can control the ditection of the muzzle. * Unattended firearms should always be unloaded. Few bunting accidents are accidents—they are usually caused by negligence. Don't LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS, NOT WITH YOUR BACK farm .100Y..#0,0e1.1.01.00‘ be at ric her end of an "acecident'". Use common sense measures and enjoy a safe hunting trip. the OPP says. Brussels industry Besides his O.Wn 40 acres of orchard, Mr,. Cardiff also rents an orchard. owned by Stewart Middleton. of Bayfield. and ap- proximately 3000 bushels of apples were picked there this year. Mr. Cardiff also recently planted a seven acre block of trees to his own orchard. Along with his apple business Mr. Cardiff operates a little store in which he sells apple, butter, apple cider, honey and eggs which come from the. 45 laying hens he owns. The store is open. from mid-September pretty well continously till the first of May, seven days a week. Malt-Side Orchard at one time belonged to William Stratychuk, Mr, Cardiff's uncle and as a young boy Lewis helped out at the orchard. That's how he got interested in the business, although .as he says, he is adaptable to different jobs. At one time he had a farm with 400 pigs and he has also hired out as a construction worker. Management, he believes, is the big thing in order to have a successful orchard operation. "If everybody is pulling their own weight it's not too bad," he said. After eight years in the business he ought to know. SEAFORTH - CAMBRIDGE - AYR -WOODSTOCK
