Poor weed control has cost
Huron County farmers at
least $1.8 million during the
past year. Weed control in ,
1978 was probably the poor-
est in the seventies. Part of
this is due to weather but the
main part is due to manage-
ment. In other words, most
of these weeds can be
controlled and they are
identified, if the right
herbicide is used at the
proper rate and time.
The 1978 crop is history.
but we can start now on the
1979 crop by identifying
weed problems now and
RICORDING these pro-
blems.
One thing is certain, many
fields have weeds going to
seed this year. These seeds
are capable of costing us
more money next year. In
fact, ;;- will take 2 or 3 years
of excellent weed control to
effectively reduce the
number of weed seeds that
are returned to the land in
1978.
Rootworm Problem
Identified
Next year's corn rootworm
control can start now by
recording fields that have a
high adult count. Adult corn
even with warm summer
weather behind us, the
season for producing fresh
crops is not yet over in.
Ontario.
At the supermarket, there
is a great selection of root
vegetables and tole crops,
such as. Brussels sprouts,
broccoli and cauliflower.
careful selection of crisp,
fresh, bleinish-free vege-
tables is important, but foou
specialists at the Ministry of
Agriculture and Food point
out that it is just as important
,to handle and store the
vegetables properly at home.
Store beets in a cool, moist
area or in the refrigprator.
Always leave a two to three
inch stem and all roots
attached. Use within 3'/2
weeks.
Broccoli and Brussels
sprouts should be stored in a
plastic bag in the refrigerator
and used within three and
five days respectively.
rootworm lay their eggs in.
August and. September. Any
fields that have high adult
counts now should have a
rootworm control nex year.
Adults of this insect eat corn
silks so that it is easy to
identify fields that have high
adult numbers. Any field •
that, has a. noticeable number
of cobs without silks has high
adult numbers,
This silk detection can be
done from a tractor or
combine seat while
harvesting. These
observations should be re-
corded since our memory is
seldom as good as we think it
is. Corn rootworm can be
controlled by rotating with
another crop or by applying
an insecticide at planting.
Store carrots. in plastic
bags (use original bag if
packaged in plastic) in a cool,
moist place or in the refrig-
erator. They will store well
for several weeks.
To store cauliflower, leave
the outer leaves attached and
cut a thin slice from the stalk.
Refrigerate and use within 10
days.
Store onions uncovered in
a cool, dry, airy place. Use
within four weeks.
Potatoes should be stored
at a cool temperature of
7-10 degrees C. (45-50
degrees F.) in a dark, airy
Place or at room tempeiature
. Squash stores best in a
cool, dry place and will keep
for several months.
