This building which now houses an auto body
repair shop was once used by blacksmiths and
'is one of the oldest buildings still standing in
Cranbrook.

Ungel in 1922, It remained in the _Engel

Cranbrook also has one of the older
cemeteries around this area and caretaker
John Schnock has some. interesting facts
about some of the !work buried there.

walked to Goderich front Cranbrook to get '

At that time the village had 350 people
and even hail a small cheese factory: As

mainly Scottish with some German and
some English people. John's own grand-
father is boric(' -there and his too, is an •
interesting story. John's grandfather came
over from Germany in 1850 settling in the
Heidelberg area. He walked from there to
Cranbrook carrying flour on his back a
distance of about 35 miles and as John
points out. it wouldn't have'been all paved
like it is today,
Another thing still standing in Cran-
hinok is the community hall which was
built in 1950, This was not the first hall in
the community however. According to the
Tweedsmuir Book, the hall was owned by
Jacob Long who rented it out to George
Wesenberg for public dances. In 1930 the
Cranbrook Athletic. Association bought the
hall and renamed it the Cranbrook

to tear down the hall which was in an
unsafe condition and to rebuild. Today a
new hall stands on a new site beside Knox
l'ivsbytcria 11 Church , the only church left
in Cranbrook. At one time there were foto
churches here. • ••
Although many of the buildings of
Cranbrook have faded except as a memory
olsomebody's past, it is still a nice place to
go for a drive or to stop and have a chat
with some or the people who live there and
who arc keeping Cranbrook alive through
their memories.
BURIED
IN
BILLS?
The first community centre in Cranbrook was built in 1930 but had to
be torn down later because of its unsafe condition. The present centre
which is situated beside Knox Presbyterian Church was built in 1950.
Knox Presbyterian Church is the only church
left in Cranbrook. At one time there were
four.
