A speech clinician will
soon be hired by the Perth
County Board of Education to
establish a program of
therapy for the over 200
children in the 'system 'who
are in need of varying
degrees of help.
The board responded to
the recommendations of
Keith Thompson, superin-
tendent of program, who had
presented the results of a
survey conducted this
summer across the county.
Thompson reported that
"one child in 10 requiries,
some form of speech or
language therapy, with the
greatest concentration being
at the primary level,"
The superintendent's two
other recommendations, that
a salary schedule for the-
clinician to range between
$12,500 and $17,900 be
accepted and that $1,950 be
set aside for furniture, equip-
ment and office supplies
wire also adopted by the
board.

Part of the impetus for
conducting the survey was a
parent delegation to the
board last June • which"
pointed out the seriousness
of the problem and the
frustrations felt by the.
parents in trying to receive
assistance from outside
agencies.
The board identified the,
northern part of the county
as being in particular need of
help.
PaVts in Listowel were
found to he having part-
icularly serious problems
attempting to use the facilities
of the Stratford clinic, and
finally a special project
funded by five service clubs
in North Perth was set up to
provide a speech therapist
mile day a week to help six
children.
However, the, report
indicates that the project
ended with the coining of fall
because the funds had run
out.
It's a good thing the
reporter's tables are situated
close to the door of the board
room in the Stratford office of
the Perth County Board of
Education.
After the board's next
regular meeting this Tuesday
smoking members of the
press might be heading for
the lobby more often than
usual.
Trustee Ronald Boyce
presented a notice of motion
- at last Tuesday's board
meeting calling.for,a ban on
smoking during all open
mectingsof the board.
Boyce told the board that
as a member of the Huron-
Perth Lung Association, he
objected to having to inhale
smoke -from some but not
all press reporters."
Three of the four reporters
who-attended Tuesday meet-
ing had lit up one cigarette
after another all through the
meeting, but none were
smoking at the time Boyce
raised the matter.
To general laughter, Boyce
told the board he felt it was

ideal situation in the past,

outlying areas of the county
who may have trouble with

board's intent, with last
week's move, to enter into

health and welfare.
