Don't let TIRECIFEET Spoil your v;sit to the PLOWING MATCH Amen THE BRUSSELS POST, SEPTEMBER 20, 1978 5 I know that standing in a line-up in Toronto last week at the theater showing In Praise of Older Women wasn't the best place in the world to be found out. There were my kids. My wife, And all those good church members I've preached to lately. I figured I didn't need a TV camera showing me as part of the masses who flocked to this publicity ridden opening night—this film that made the Censor board cut out 38 seconds--this film that competes with Swedish dirty movies and that makes the righteous cringe. But I had to take the chance. I had to find myself milling around that first night crowd, Because honest, I was working. Working real hard with my tape recorder in tow, It's tough. Standing in line for hours. It's rough. Watching seven. explicit love making scenes. And taking the jibes that i was making a porno tape,. now that I'd seen a porno movie But that's all part of a night's work. I came to the theatre with two questions in mind. I was asking them for CBC's Morningside Program. What is it about olderwomen that attracts:a young man? And why is the older woman/younger man set up becoming more common in our day? Don't let anyone kid you. These questions had a point-of-view and a direction of thought that should make for easy agreement. But you know, you just can't rook that over most people. They challenge the question. They criticizethe assumptions. I think'that's worth rememberingfi censor boards, school boards, whoever. People have enough mind to make their own decisions. They have enough common sense and right judgement to come to their own conclusions. They can look and see for themselves and answer for. themselves. What amazed me that night at the theatre was that most people felt the same way about the film and the two questions. Most of them--with only, a few exceptions said the, one bedroom scene after the other got boring. There was no story line. No plot. No development of characters. No maturing. Mostly a selfish young man grabbing and getting. One man said if they'd show this film to every high school student in the country ' it would stop promiscuity immediately. The film is dull, dull, dull, he saidAnd my older woman question . Almost every person said it -wasn't the age that matters. Its the individual and his personality that count, Sure, some would admit, The older woman--or man--might have more experience, charm, warmth, sensitivity and caring qualities, yet in the end. it was not the age that attracted, but the person, Age was secondary, a concomitant to the personality. Firm, tight bodies may appeal to the older woman. The vitality and spirit of a younger woman to an older man. The security and settledness of an older man to a younger woman. But in the long run, the person attracts, not his age. - And my second question. Why is it thatthe younger man-older woman combination is more common these days? Most people wouldn't agree to my questions. They said this set up has been around all along. That relationship is only more open, now. It's out of hiding, The media are hyping it. Every major magazine has picked -up the theme. So have books, television and now the film. It's just a hot topic that's selling' swell. Yet one woman could give me some sound economic and personal reasons for it. Freed from the kitchen and kids, women now move, in the work world where they meet many more men. They earn more money. They spend it on clothes, hairdos, the pill, glamor and body upkeep. Keeping in shape and eating the right food make them more attractive. They don't work themselves into an early maturity like the old farm women did-- having ten kids, stooking hay in the • field, and milking cows in the barn. I talked to one young man. He was nineteen. Did he like older women? Sure, he said, he liked older women. But did he ever make love to them? "Well, no, he said, "I never thought of that. I prefer young girls:" "But e ] thought you said yOu like older. women?" "I do," he grinned, "I like older women, like my mom:" So there I was. Back to mom and apple pie at a lusty movie. The young man had the right idea. He can say he likes older women, but that doesn't mean he has to spend his time with them in the bedroom. Don't let anyone kid you. The public has it right on. Good sense. Common sense and sound judgement. Despite loaded questions-. media events and jaded sex. by Karl Schuessler • rl Your husineis is like a rocking chair .. .
