Expect your insurance
company to he sympathetic
if you suffer a fire, damage
or theft loss. Don't expect
them to give you a blank
cheque for you to fill in the
amount -to which you think
you are entitled.
Even the most generous
insurance company will
only go as far as honoring
the terms of your policy.
In such circumstances, your
best friend is a carefully
documented and fully
supported statement of
your possessiops and their
value.
Your first step therefore
is a complete inventory of
your belongings and an
independent assessment of
their worth. The latter • is

A smorgasbord dinner 'was
most important when it
comes to items whose
values tend to groW, rather
than decline, over the .•
years.
And in a time of soaring
inflation, this is all the
more important. A piece of
china or glassware, for
example, which might not
even have been worth
including in your inventory
a few years ago, could be
an antique today. If you
keep sales receipts from
purchases, this will help
establish value.
An inventory can be
tedious and will involve
going through the house,
opening every drawer and
examining every shelf,and
'noting the contents.
A useful aid is to
embark on a photo safari
the house, taking pictures
of walls, rugs, inside of
cupboards, closets and
