HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Brussels Post, 1978-06-07, Page 11Ontario hay growers are
warming up for the race against
the alfalfa weevil.
"After disappointing work with
other parasitic wasps, I am most
excited about this particular
species. Wherever it is,
established, it seems to give
about 60 percent cntrol in the
spring," says Professor C.R.
Ellis, Department of En-
vironmental Biology, Ontario
Agricultural College.
Previous experiments, funded
by the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food and
Agriculture Canada, were only
partially effective because wasps
attacked just the egg or larval
stages, not the adult.
The foreign parasitic wasps lay
eggs in the adult weevil. Within
two days, the weevil becomes
sterile and, incapable of laying its
300 to 400 eggs.
The wasp larvae emerge from
the weevil host about May 1 and
attack other weevils which have
survived the winter. This greatly
reduces the •alfalfa weevil
population. •
To improve this biological
control method, Professor Ellis is
advising Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food extension
staff how to establish the small
parasitic wasps in areas which do
not have control. Extension staff
are collecting alfalfa weevil host
to be taken to the Simcoe
Research Station where they will

Hay growers ready to fight alfalfa weevil
Brussels farmers win
be introduced to the parasitic in first-growth sterns and opening
wasps reared in the laboratory. buds,. Eafly mowling - is less
These infected weevils will be
released throughout south-
western Ontario. It is hoped the
wasps will hatch, multiply and,
establish wide biological control
throughout the province.
This method.- has proved ef-
fective at South Bay, Prince
Edward County. The multiplying
characteristics of these wasps
make it a promising method of
control against alfalfa weevil.
In the meantime, early cutting
of alfalfa is still highly recom-
mended to deprive weevil larvae
of food and shelter and to take
advantage of high protein content
damaging to the parasites than
insecticides.
The market at Brussels
Stockyards met a strong demand
on Friday with steady prices.
There 're 1504 cattle and 2190
pigs on offer. This was a record
