Alfred .Knight, 'mon. •:of many crcifts.
ibv Debbie Ranneyl
Allred Knight of Brussels is a
man of many crafts and activities.
His apartment in the senior
citizens apartment building is
decorated with examples of his
work.
Over 300 elementary school
teachers from all over. Ontario
spent their weekend (April 21 and
22) in Toronto learning more
about tne ways in which young
children learn.
A new book on Early Childhood
Education, which has-just been
published by the Federation. of
Women Teachers, was given to
each delegate. This book explores
One of Mr. Knight's first
hobbies was photography, He got
started in photography when he
was given $25 in recognition of
long service on the cemetery
board in Ci•anbrook. Mr. Knight
let the money sit around for
the complexities which must be
considered when planning ef-
fective learning for young
children.
Attending the, conference from
this area were Mary Ellen Walsh
of Walton Public School, Marjorie
Freeman of Robertson Memorial
Scoot, Nancy McIntyre of Turn-
berry School, Collett ,Robertson of
Wingham Public School, Marilyn
'Bridges of East Wawanosh School
and Karen Anne Wailen of
Stephen Central School.
Dr. Bayne Logan, a professor at
the University of Ottawa, gave a
preSentatiofi on children's
emotional development and Dr.
Janet Russell, a professor at
Queen's University. outlined how
children learn to use language.
Dr. Marcel Kinsbourtie from the
Toronto Hospital for Sick
Children explained the' causes of
hyperactivity and advised .'
teachers how such behaviour can
awhile and, then decided to buy an
instamatie camera. with. it, Now..
he enters his pictures at local fairS
around the area including
Brussels, Grcy.and Howick and in
many cases has won first prizes
with them.
About 1972 or 1973 a craft
workshop was started in down-
town Brussels. by ,,,,,some young.
people who.had gotten a govern-
ment grant. It was in - the
wintertime and whenever Mr.
Knight could hewerit down. to`the
shop and worked at whatever
craft they were having that day.
"I worked at them all," Mr.
Knight said.
He learned straw weaving,.
•candlemaking and other typeS of
weaving. Mr.. Knight still ha's a
hathmat at his apartment that ,he
-made on a homemade" weaving
loom. Mr. Knight even -does
weaving with baler twine.
He has worked with four
different twines. including original
fibre, two plastic twines and
nylon twine. He made coasters,
slippers and belts with baler
twine. He said he had done more
than 100 styles of coasters with
combinations of colouring -in the
baler twine.
Mr. Knight said he never had
any literature on working with
baler twine buf, "It's by. far the
most creative of anything I've
ever tackled:"
Mr. Knight has also hooked a
lot oirugs. In fact he's currently
working on Number 15. sThe first
rug he ever hooked was one of the
Canadian flag..
Homemade gifts arc usually
gifts of the best kind—gifts made
be managed. There was dis-
cussion on 'the pros and cons of
using tranquilizers with children.
with a loving touch. That's
probably the reason why Mr.
Knight chooses to give his many
crafts away for gifts rather than
selling them to outsiders.
He has given away his various
works for wedding and birthday
presents and says, ''It's my
ambition to have something that
all my nieces and grandnieces
would like, W hen they come in
and like something, I simply tell
them that's yourS."
Mr, Knight also has made
cushions--including a hooked one
and one made of .needlepoint. He
has also done liquid 'painting on
different "materials. And he has
just finished, doing his first oil
painting.
Before coning to Brussels,
Mr. Knight worked at farming,
first mixed farming and later on
strictly beef cattle. He moved to
.Brussels in the fall of 1957 and,
moved into the senior citizens
apartments in 1975.
- A plaque on his wall from the
Horticultural Association certifies
that he has been given an award
for his mcritorius service to
Horticulture. Mr. Kight has been
a member of the .Horticultural
Society for 18 yearS and is
continuing his duty by looking
after. the Horticultural ' Park in
i3russels. He has also been active
in the cancer drive for the past
two years.
Mr. Knight is also an active
traveller and has taken trips to
Alaska,•the Peace River country,
California, England, Scotland,
