BAREFOOT IN THE PARK — Floyd Herman as
Paul Bratter strikes a dramatic pose as he points out
the hole in the skylight to Corie-(Arlene Dunbar) as
an indication of where he got his cold from when she
made him sleep on the couch in a scene from

School last week. (Staff.Photo)

LOST APPETITE — Joyce Van Vliet (as Mrs. Banks) chokes as she finds out-that
neechi is a dish that uses eel as its main ingredient. To her left is. Don Dunbar as
Victor Velasco the man who cooked the dish, Arlene Dunbar (behind her as Corie
Bratter) and Floyd Herman as Paul Bratter, in a scene from N eil Simnan's play

Live theatre
Alive and well at Grey Central
by Debbie Ranney
Live theatre is not dead. It's
alive and well and living at Grey
Central School.
At least it was when the Grey
Central Home and School As-
sociation put on its production of
Neil Simon's play, Barefoot in the
Park at the school in Ethel last
week.
The story of a newly-wed
couple living on the sixth floor of
an apartment building in New
York which only has five flights of
stairs leading to it and, no
elevator, and their reactions 'to
each other, her mother and the
crazy neighbour who lives above
them provided many laughs fora
thoroughly entertained audience.
Floyd Herman as the logical
young attorney Paul Bratter and
Arlene Dunbar, as his more
idealistic young wife Conic, pro-
vide a good contrast to each
other. Mr. Herman is especially
good in the last scene of the play
in which he comes home stumbl-
ing drunk, with his shirt half
open, his tie askew and shoes but
no socks.
He was so good in fact that
even co-star Arlene Dunbar start-
ed laughing. Mrs. Dunbar also
has some pretty good acting
moments herself -as when she
shouts at the top of her lungs. "I
am not hysterical," and yells,
"yes I am" and bursts into tears
'when Paul asks her if she's going
to cry.
Another exceptional perform-
ance was given by Joyce Ven Vliet
as Corrie's mother who can say
more with her eyes rolling around
her head than she ever could with
her mouth. She provides a great
deal of the hilarity when Paul
brings her home from a re-
staurant, drunk. Her wide open
eyes and mouth tell the whole
story and Floyd Herman as Paul
helps convey the message when
he walks in the door after carrying
her five flights. .Their combined
expressions caused the audience
to roar with laughter.
What can one say about Don
Dunbar's performance as the
Bratters crazy neighbour Victor
Velasco who goes out into 35
degree weather without a coat on,
eats strange exoctic foods and is
known for his appetite for young
women? Mr. Dunbar plays his
part to a T, first frightening Code
who has heard Of his Unsavotiry
reputation and then telling her
that he's a nice guy.
With perfect deadpan he tells
the B ratters they are invited to
his cocktail party but they're
supposed to bring the liquor.
Perhaps the greatest kick the
audience got out of his perform-
ance was when his face appeared
inthe sky light over the Bratter's
apartment, a great ending for the
first act of the play.
Supporting players Lothar
Weber as the man delivering
wedding presents and Toni Dur-
rant as the telephone repairman
also give fine performances. The
exhausted expression on Lothar
Weber's face after the delivery
man has walked five flights with a
load of packages is priceless.. Toni
Durrant is hilarious- also as lie
deadnans, "Do you want me to
look?" when Paul asks Code if
there's any beer in the house and
she refuses to answer because
..they've just had an argument.
All in all, the show belongs to
no one person in ,,,,particular
because both. actors and actresses
make the most of the scenes in
which they are the focal point.
A play of course, is not just
made up of actors, but also of
production people, directors,
costumers, make-up people light-
ing and sound effects people and
many others all of whom in .this
