An energy resource centre will
be established inGbderich /viarch i[
One of 149 centres 'set up across
the country through the federal
department of labor, to encourage
less resouree consumption and
educate the public on resource
alternatives.
Goderich project co-ordinator,
Tony McQuail, said the resource
centres are just setting, up across
Canada under a public service
contract, which although
admittedly will provide needed
jobs is geared to working with the
community in helping meet their
needs and desires on energy
conservation.
Tony has hired six additional
full-time employees to staff the
centre which is expected to be
open six days a week and most
evenings.The employees will be
trained as a group to acquaint
themselves with the purpose of
the program.
McQuail explained that the
group hopes to establish an
extensive library on energy,
conservation and alternative
energy sources such as solar
heating and wind powered
,generators. he added that the
group will be prepared to give
demonstrations and talks on
various aspects of conservation
and energy alternatives.
The resource centre - in
Goderich will only be operational
for six months.but it is hoped the
basic formula of the program,
educating the public, will be
carried on by community. or
church groups. The resource
centre will close the first week of
September.
And Tony',s main objective,
other than making the public
aware of the centre and its.
benefits, Will be to work- with,
community groups and teachers
as well, who may want to include
conservation on their curriculum,
so the program may continue on
its own merit when the centre
closes.
"I Mope groups can continue

McQuail said that small
insulation clinics will be held as
well as others on educating the
public on how to make their home
energy, efficient. Another major
consideration ' for efficiency is
renewabl :e alternatives such as
solar energy and wind power but
Tony explained that the cost has
been a deterrent.
He calculated that if a
homeowner is now paying $400 a
year for fuel to heat a home then
calculated on a 12 per cent
increase per year the cost of
heating that home in 1988 will
rise to $3,900.
"There will be lots of emphasis
on alternatives because it will be
beneficial if we can substitute for
some of our dewindling
resources," he said. "We must
first, "try to, make our society
energLefficient and then look at "
substitutes and start working now
for a secure and comfortable
future."
McQuail is quite conversant
with the topics of energy and

perhaps several church and civic

has a real and serious purpose
and that is to impart the need for

of it."

Resource Centre in Toronto.
The Canadian public has
become more conscious about
energy conservation recently due
to rising costs. It starts to hurt
when we feel it °in the wallet.
McQuail said thSt immense
savings can be made through
conservation and the centre can
provide some specific help.
The centre, through Toronto,
will have the resources to'
conduct a computer analysis 'of a
homes heating qualities.
Applicants will simply have to fill
out a questionnaire_ describing
their house and the heating
capabilities.
