Keep awake
When I cover thousands of kilometers, on'
the highway, I'm always looking for things to
keep me awake. Those miles can wear you
down and put you asleep. Highway hypnosis
is the word I've heard for it.
There's a few cures, alright. I read about
them in a pamphlet put out by the New Jersey
Turnpike Commission. Every minute or so
refocus your eyes. Look to the far distance and
then shift to the near. Move your head from
side to side every so often. Get a wide view -
right and left - - of your driving world.
Turn on your radio. Talk to your wife or
whoever else is sitting next to you. Talk to
yourself, if you have to. Do anything! But be
sure to keep awake. That's the game you play
with yourself when you're, on the highway.
I found a new game. Reading bumper
stickers. They're all over • the place in the
U.S.A. I mean, naturally they're on the
bumper, but you do find them on almost every
car. Bumper stickers and C.B.'s are standard
car equipment.
I can't read as many roadsigns as I .used to
in the States. The U.S. has taken a lesson from
Canada. Their new federal highways and
interstates don-'t garhage up with vulgar signs
and other coarse outburSts: They keep
advertising down. Their road information is
standardized, sanitized and minimized.
But garbage or no, all those old highway
signs and advertisements did help to keep me
awake. What those signs used to do, now the
' bumper stickers are doing. Only this time,
they're on wheels and constantly changing.
Graffiti has come off the walls and onto
bumper stickers.

A table of deficit and taxes for
1976 that Mr. Lyndon presented
to council showed that Brussels
had an operating loss 'of $80,600
and a total deficit of, $84,200 of
which-Brussels, Morris & Grey
paid $5,049.55. The'province paid
out $2,666 in grants to Brussels
in lieu of taxes.
The Brussels operating deficit
is the largest in the county
because in* 1976 there were a lot
of vacancies in the senior citizens
apartments, according to village
clerk, Bill King.
In other business, council
passed a by-law to erect four. .
way stop signs at Thomas *arid
James Streets and at James and
Ellen Streets.
Council decided to put two
warnings in the newspaper telling
snowmobilers to reduce the
speeds of their machines and not
to drive on the sidewalks. If the
warnings aren't obeyed a by-law
will be passed prohibiting
snowmobiles on the streets of the
village.
In additional business, council
decided that Donald Carter would
be paid $110 a week for garbage.
collection. The village will take
out a full page ad for the Atom
Hockey Tournament. CounCil
decided to hire Hugh LaFay as a
sales tax consultant and to donate
$25 to the Huron Plowman's
Association. •
I read plenty about love on those bumper
stickers. "Virginia is for lovers" declares
many a sticker in that state. "Jesus loves,
you" says another. "Did you hug your kid
today?" asks another.
Not all the good one liners were on bumper
stickers, either. I found a good one on 'a
fishing dock for Lorne Willson, the master
fisherman of Brodhagen. "Allah does not
deduct from the alloted time of man those
hours spent in fishing".
And when my pocket book started to seize
u0 and I couldn't find any overnight motels
under $20.00, I remembered "A miser is
someone who scrimps all his life, so he can die
poor". Right then and there I determined I'd
go to my grave broke and not let the kids have
anything to fight over.-
And when I saw the sign in a gas 'station
window that read "A Christian owns and
operates this gas station. Jesus is Lord of
All", I knew I was in the south's .Bible belt.
And I ' knew Colonel Sander's Kentucky
Fried Chicken was getting a good run when a
sign said, "If the Colonel had our secret
recipe, he'd be a General."
And I knew for sure, the environmentalists
had gone too far when they endangered our
national institution, the beaver. "Save a tree,
'eat a beaver."
And when I feel myself writing on and on
this way I remember "A fool's heart is in his
tongue, but a wise man's tongue is in his
heart."
That's it. That's all. That's enough for the
day. But honest,. those bumper stickers and
signs did keep me awake for miles and miles
in the States.
