Some folks through this area
discovered what it was like to be
without telephone service last
week. The Brussels Utility
workmen, seeking to repair a
broken water main, had received
a location on the buried telephone
cable at the north end of
Turnberry Street„but the location
given them proved to ,be 3 feet
away from the actual location of
the buried telephone cable and a
main telephone cable was
disrupted. ' This occurred on
Thursday of last week and it was
reported. that most service had
been restored later that evening.
However, a man. from Ethel told
this office on Monday that
telephone service was still out, in
the Ethel community.

Although village clerk, Bill
King, said he hasn't heard of any
coritractors being signed and he
hasn't received any word on
tenders being called for the
construction of sanitary sewers,
there have been some recent
indications that brussels will soon
get a start on its new sewer
system.
At a meeting of the Brussels
Business' Association (BSA) last
week, alternate places to hold a
midway had to be Suggested since
the original located behind the old
arena •may be' rented out for
equipment for the construction of
new sewers..
In August 1917, a picture on
the front page of the Post showed

Last. October, council passed a
bylaw for the sale of land to the
Ministry of the EnvirOnment for a
meeting Monday night.
Mr.' Lyndon answered
questions from members of the
various councils , about the
proposed plan.
Reeve Cal Krauter suggested
that if the county takes over the
council will have little'input in the
senior citizens apartments.
Mr. Lyndon said, "If somebody
wants -to put in input we're not
going to run away from you.
Mr. Lyndon said that the 71/2 '
per cent deficit municipalities
now pay was going to be spread
over 26 municipalities in Huron
'County on a per capita basis so
the Brussels building's share will
be less.
- One, councillor expressed
concern that the proposal might
cost the townships more money.
"It always seems to me, the,
bigger we get, ,the more it costs
pumping station for sewage
disposal which was to be located
in the trailer park. By November
of 1977, the Ministry of the
Environment had negotiated
easements for the sewers in the
village.
In 1975, it had been reported in
the Brussels Post that sewage
treatment was to cost $2.7
million. The province was to
subsidize 75 per cent of the cost of
the system and the town's share
of the cost Was to be $700,000 but
at the end. of 40 years, given a
Constant population, the residents
were to have paid about
$3,200,000 for sewer services.

ment had given April 1, 1978,. as

us," he said.
Another councillor suggested
trying out the proposal for a five
year period' and Mr. Lyndon
said that was up to county
council.
Concern was expressed by a
township councillor that with five
towns and three villages, the
villages didn't have a chance of
cancelling out the town's vote,
"This goes through the whole
county so you've got a chance,"
Mr. Lyndon said.
Reeve Krauter was worried
about loss of autonomy.
"If we lose autonomy on too big
a base we get 90 per cent of the
pay and 10 per cent of the say",
