As I put together a few items
for the noon pick up on Monday,
it is hoped the weather: doesn't
turn out like it did last week at
this time when it got much worse
as the day went on. We were most
fOrtunate in this,.area to, hive
hydro throughout the storm,
although .many were unable to
reach home Monday night.
As the storm subsided early
Tuesday evening, the county road
to :Seaforth was finally opened
'with three snowplows for the
ambulance to reach the Hugh
Johnston farm on the 17th
concession of Grey Township.
Their daughtet Joyce Colyer was
taken to Seaforth Hospital where
she required oxygen. She was
transferred to Victoria Hospital,
London On SatUrday for further
treatment, we wish her well. The
family visited her oil Sunday.
It meant Cancelling all unit
meetings and some of them are
rescheduled for this week if the
weatherman co-operates. This
time last year, it was much the
same and one didn't go very far
from home. •
It 'didn't keep a feW of the
ladies in the village home last
week as they ventured out to the
Reid home to do some quilting. It
is a good pasttime and Most
rewarding for the hours spent.
Mr. George Williamson has
been a patient in Listowel
Hospital, hope he is soon much
improved,
Congratulations to Mr, William
Bennett who celebrates his 92nd
birthday on January 20.
Mark and David MeLlwain of

John Cochrane, director of
education. for Huron County,
stuck his neck out for acounty
eleinentary school teacher who
bad her vacation plans
jeopardized by stormy weather in
Huron early last week. Mr.
Cochrane granted the teacher a
week's leave of absence so she
could accompany her husband on
a trip to Acapulco.
The decision for the leaVe of
absence would normally be made
by the bciard but stormy weather
delayed the board, meeting from
January 9 to January 11. The
leave of absence, was requested
for January 12 to January 20, a
seven days leave.
Board chairman John Elliott
asked the board to grant the leave
adding that the director had
already given it and needed the
board's blessing to make it
official.
"Based on previous board
presedence,"' added Mr
Cochrane quickly.
"I vote we turn it down," joked
Wingham trustee Jack
Alexander.
Cochrane told the board that
the teacher. who was referred to
only as employee S.I.N. 444 638
035, had a desirable record of
attendance and that her principal
had given his permission for the
leave subject to board approval.
He Said the teacher had prepared
work for the students so that they

the winning goal. Local boys

include Brad Knight, Alan Bray
and Jerry Alechiouski.
ONE WIN —ONE LOSS

ment. He added that the trip had
been won from the teacher's
husband's employer and was
rather unexpected.
The board granted the leave
but Zurich trustee Herb Turkheim
asked why the teacher was
referred to by number. He said
the board always used names in
these Situations. `
SuPerintendent of education
Robert Allan told the board that
normally the decision would be
made in committee of the, whole
and the name would be used. He
said there would be no problem
naming the teacher if the board
wished.
Another request for a 25 day
leave of absence wsa turned down
by the board. The teacher asked
for a leave from January '30 to
March 3 and the education leave
plan committee recommended
that the board not grant it.
Goderich trustee Cayley Hill
said 'he was inclined to agree with
the recommendation pointing otit
that the teacher has a contract
with the board, Hill said the
teacher indicated that the leave
would be a "form of professional
development" but added that if
the teacher was that anxious tt

Nutritional needs in the
growing yeaes are greater than
those of adults. Nutrition Canada
(a cross —'the --country survey
conducted in the early 70's)
showed that the major nutrition
problems of children and
adolescents are widespread iron
deficiency, inadequate intakes of
calcium and vitamin D and
vitamin A.
Food needs are so great during
these active years that it is
especially difficult to make up the
lost if breakfast is skipped.
Breakfast food haters can now
be tempted with traditonal non
breakfast foods like hamburger or
soup, cheese and crackers or
yogurt and peanuts. For those on
the run, a glass of breakfast,(egg,
milk, orange juice put in the
blender) can be downed while
dressing or muffins, cheese and
an,orange can be taken to eat on
the school bus.
Snack foods for the school age
child can be good nutrition if the
choices are made from foods
within the many "no-preparation-
needed" foods of the four food
groups of Canada's Food Guide,
e. g. ice cream, yog\ur.t., banana,
orange, raisins, raw carrots,
muffins, peanuts, canned or
sliced meat etc . Nutritious,

well-balanced meals can be
created in minutes by using such
foods.
Schools have a responsibility
not only to teach nutrition but to
offer opportunities for students to
practise good nutrition at
cafeterias and school vending
machines.
During Nutiriton Week January
23 - 28, 1978, many schools in
Huron County will turn their
attention to nutrition education.
All schools in Huron County will"
be supplied with a "Nutrition
Happenings Handbook of Ideals
and Resources'.' prepared by the
Ontario Ministry of Health. This
resource book gives excellent
information and guidebines on
how to teach nutrition to the
school-age child.
Special programmes will be
conducted by nutrition education:
professions in the county.. The
community nutritionist, local
public health nurses, hospital
dietitians and county home
economists plan to be working
and co-operating with teachers
and parents in several parts of the
county to bring accurate nutrition
knowledge to the school-age
child. Additional programmes
may be carried on by individual
classroom teachers using the
"Nutrition Happenings
Handbook".
