Mrs. Freeman gave a short talk on the founding of the first Institute and had one member come up and light a candle to represent the beginning of the W. 1. at Stoney Creek. This was followed by other members lighting candles to represent the starting of the Institute in England, Ireland,, Norway, Greece, India, Jordan, Philippiries, Fiji, Zambia / and Kenya. The first organization was started in 1897 at the Erland Lee homestead and from there has spread all over the world. Mrs. Freeman noted that among the many projects sponsored by tell W.I are 441 clubs, whose value cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Institute members joined in singing several Christmas carols and many described how christmas is celebrated in other countries, Mrs. Freeman wished the Bluevale Institute well in the future as it has done in the past. Mrs. Bill de Vos thanked the speaker and presented her with a gift. The meeting closed witht he singing of more carols. The January meeting will be held January 11 at 2 p.m. at the home of Mrs, Ken Simmons. The roll call will be "What would you like to see changed in marketing?" The lunch committee is Mrs. Murray Jenkins, Mrs. Harvey Timm and Mrs. Charles Mathers. Mrs. Florence Diamond was recently elected as the new provincial president. Church. He read the Christmas story from Matthew and in his sermon asked "Where does God fit 'into our Christmas celebrations and the nativity scene?". Christmas is saying that God loves each one of us, he noted. Mrs. Wendell Stamper, U.C.W. president,. placed the manger symbol on the "Awareness Tree" to help the congregation realize very common places can become important as a result of Jesus' coming. She lit the fourth candle as a reminder 'that the light of Jesus makes ordinary human beings truly alive. Dr. HazelWood conducted the service in the absence of the regular minister, Rev. Wilena 'Brown, who was called to her home because of the serious illness of her mother. Mrs. Daniel. Brown passed away December 13 with the funeral service held Saturday at Truro, Nova Scotia. Miss Brown's many friends express their sympathy.. Parents and friends gathered Sunday afternoon when the Sunday School pupils presented their Christmas program. Recitations, piano solos, skits, dialogues, step dancing and carols were enjoyed with Sunday School Superintendent, Harold Johnston introducing the numbers. Bags of candy were distributed to the children. Lunch was served after the program and a. social time enjoyed. The Women's Institute members, 4-H leaders and guest speaker Mrs. John Freeman d• ined at Turnberry Tavern, December 14. Following the dinner President Mrs. Jim Armstrong, opened the meeting and the minutes, financial state- ment and thank you cards were read by secretary-treasurer, Mrs. Mel Craig. Training schools for the spring 4-H project will be held in Gorrie, January 24-25 and Wingham January 26-27. Institute members were asked what month they would like to visit and entertain the residents at Calendar Nursing Home. They plan to go in April, they decided, if this date suits the home, Mrs. Bert Garniss and Mrs. Alex MacTavish displayed their quilt designs for the plowing match but nothing definite was decided about them. Ross call was marked by the exchange of , small gifts. Each person went to the front of the room and picked one of the beautifully wrapped gifts from under the Christmas tree.
