I ant ng at an No et to ve y. he he lia at -d ck men by Karl $chuessjer Christmas is corning. And so is the Messiah, Everyone's cooperating. The snow god just laid in a year's supply of snow in a single week. I sure wish I had him on my work team. What that guy can do with a little wind behind him! My driveway's all piled up in snow, so Harvey Ahrens can come down and blow'it all out --not 'with his own wind of course, although I will admit Harvey can talk. But he's got a new snow blower machine on his tractor. Harvey claims we don't have enough snow--yet. Now, maybe that's his sense of humour, but with that new machine of his, he can never have enough snow to keep her busy, As I s,ay, every one's cooperating. Ralph Wietersen's Christmas trees are in. My mailbox is now squashed into a seven inch miniature --thanks to the snowplow. My wife keeps saying she has to wash the windows before Christmas --only on the inside, of course. But she never gets to it. She has a ladder posted outside right beside the front door. I practically trip over it everytime I walk in. Why doesn't she move the thing? It's for those windows she's going to get at any day now, she insists. I think she's trying to tell me something. Why don't I move it? Move it in?and stand on it? Ahd go to it? But the snow covered it all over last week, That's one job, - before Christmas that's blanketed and forgotten. Enough. Enough of all these earthly things. Christms is corning 'and so is the Messiah, That's where my thoughts should be. I'm thinking. I'm thinking. The Messiah's coming. That CBC radio program on the Messiah I'm working on is putting me in the Christmas mood. And all 'those Jewish stories on Messiah's coming build on one expectant hope after another, Especially when you listen to an Orthodox rabbi like Shlomo Carlebach. This rabbi tells,y ou, that cabalistic tradition says you can bring-in-the Messiah if you want him to come bad enough: If you long for him desperately enough, if you expect him urgently enough, that Great Desire of Nations will come. But longing enough isn't good enough. You have to know wh ',at to do with the Messiah once he's come. The rabbi tells a story ab out a young 17 year old student who had all those desperate yearnings for the Messiah to come, So he went into the synagogue, picked up the ram's horn and blew. He wanted that blast to bring on the Messiah. It worked. The graves opened up in the cemetery and the dead star ted to come forth. The boy panicked. He didn't know what to do. He was terrified. He ran over to his teacher . - rabbi and told him what was happening. The rabbi told the dead to return to their graves, He sent them all back. And .he shook his head at the boy. "Don't do that again," he said, "You were brave enough to raise a tumult, but you didn't know what to do once he came. If you really wanted the Messiah to come, you'd welcome him and know what to do." KnOwing what to do is important. The rabbi; says we're Messiah-like people when we do , something--when we're like Abraham and not like Noah. You remember Noah. God said he was going to send a. flood and Noah gave him n o argument. He agreed, - if that's the way God wanted it. It was his way . His say. ' But when God told Abraham he is going to destroy the city because of the people's Wickedness., Abraham talked back to God. He negotiated with Him. He' partnered himself with God -and he managed to save three, almost four neonle. from Sodom,. Lot's wife didn't quite make it. She looked back and became a pillar of salt. Rabbi Carlesbach says most holy and pious people are Noah people. When disaster looms, they roll their eyes heavenward and ay, "It's God's will..'' But Abraham people don't. They're like the doctor who looks at a sick person" and says "I'M going to do everything to make this person well". Instead of saying, << person God will this person should die." The Messiah's coming. For Christians he's totting once again in ten more days. For -Christians he's coming again at the end of the age. For the Jewish people, Messiah IS tailing too, The Messiah IS Omit*.• Th . all at"s What Christmas arid this day today-- is about, The Messiah is coming
