rtificial insemination
s on the increase
reflects the decline in the size of
the national beef herd' and the
general sluggishness of the beef
industry.
Among the beef bulls, the
demand was greatest for
Hereford semen. More than
113,000 dairy and beef cows were
bred with Hereford semen;
54;000 cows were bred with
,Simmental semen. :and about
30,000,7, ach with blaCk Aberdeen
Angus and Charolais.
Semen ,imports and exports
both declined in 1976.
-About 952,000 units of semen
-were exported last year compared
to 1,259,000 units the year
before. The semen exported in
1976 to 51 countries was valued
at approximately $4.9 million. -
There were 29 different breeds
represented with the black and
white, and red and white
Holstein-Friesian breeds accoun-
ting for 70 per cent of the total
units exported.
There were about 126,000 units
„imported in 1976 in comparison
with 213,000 units in 1975,
