A leading supply firm
dealing in insulating
materials gets many quest-
ions from homeowners
facing special insulating
situations. Here are some of
the answers that might help
solve individual problems.
Q. How do I insulate my
basement walls to refinish
the area for a recreation
room?
A. If you're planning to
finish off a recreation room in
the basement, there are
special unfaced fiber glass
insulation products which
can be easily installed
without adhesives.
First, nail furring strips
either 16 or 24 inches apart
along the basement wall.
Then install batts of fiber
glass masonry wall insulation
which are available in 3/4 or
11/2 inch thicknesses between
the furring strips.
Finally, staple a polyethy-
lene vapor barrier onto the
strips and you're ready to
add wall board, paneling or
whatever interior finish you
had in mind.
You could also use a
foil-backed gypsum board to
provide both the vapor
barrier and interior finish.
Q. I'm building an "A"
frame house and I'm not sure
what kind of insulation to use
or how to install it. Can you
help?
A. I would recommend
using batts of kraft faced
fiber glass insulation,
installed between the roof
rafters with the vapor barrier
facing the interior of the
house. You could also use
unfaced batts of fiber glass
insulation with a polyethy-
lene sheet installed just
above the finishing surface.
Either way, you'll have an
excellent vapor barrier which
will decrease any chance of
moisture condensing on the
underside of the roof deck.
If possible use 2 x lOs or 2
x 12s as rafters to properly
accommodate the insulation.
(We recommend a minimum
of 6-inch-thick, R-19, fiber
glass baits.) Also, make sure
there is a ventilation space of
11/2 to 2 inches between the'
top of the insulation and the
underside of the roof deck.
