'It's the best of 'times. It's the worst of
times. The best of times is this. The maples
are dropping down a throw rug of yellow
leaves under their branches. And in their
moreimaginative moments, they're splashing
around dashes of red and rust and orange.
They lay out this lavish display of colour
without a paint brush or a do-it-yourself kit.
They have no schooling in paints and painting.
It's an effortless artistry. It seems they don't
even try to look good.
Yes. These are the best of times: When the
warm weather dries up the fields and the corn
wagons move once again on the land. The
tractors clog the roads into town and bring in
their harvest of gold to the Co-op.
The fields become one big furrowed brow of
earth turned over in rich browns: The land
deserves this winter's rest after yielding a
summer's best.
Yes. These are the best of times. When a
spell of grace extends summer a little longer
and pushes back the hard frost and cold nips
of late fall. When the threat of winter is
forgotten and you think summer might go on
forever.
Well, that's the sign. That's the portend
that we're in for a run of good weather. Maybe
even for six weeks.
They've seen it happen all before. Back in
1923. Thats when their lumber mill burned
down in Brodhagen. In November. Same kind
of weather. Balmy and warm. Hazy. And
those same thunderclouds and lightening and
few drops of rain in the sky.
- "And the same day, the Staffa, mill burned
down, too," Edwin says.

Obituary
FRED W. MARTIN
Mr, Fred William . Martin, a
resident of R.R .3, Thamesville,
passed away at the Public
General Hosptial, Chatham, on
Thursday, October 13, 1977 in
his 65th yeara.
He is survived by his wife the
former Elizabeth J. Baker of
Cranbrook, one daughter Brenda
of Milton; three sisters Mrs. Gen
(Leeta) Nelson of Waterford, Mrs.
kenneth (Margaret) Lefler of
Peterborough and Mr. Herb
Lipsit of Simcoe and two
grandsons Paul and Michael
Brown.
The late Mr. Martin, rested at
the John C. Badder Funeral
Rome, Thamesville, until
Sunday, October ' 16, when
Of course there was no connection between
those two accidental fires , but Edwin was just
nailing down that 1923 weather, confirming ,
the repeat of it these 54 years later.
Mind you, the Rock brothers aren't staking
their reputation on this kind of forecast.
"I don't pretend to be a prognosticator of
the elements," Norman grins, ',Tut I'd still
say we're in for some nice weather."
I'll stick with the Rock Brothers when it
comes to that kind of prognosis. They're one ,
sixth right already. Chalk off one week of good
weather.
Now, for the worst of times. It's this winter
coming up. I've heard it's going to be a long
john winter. And when the Old Farmer's
Almanac came out a few weeks ago, it talked
about a cold and gloomy winter, with snow 15
to 20 inches above the average. And the
winter chill will slide fight down into Florida.
Even the animals are sending out signals.
The bears are fat already, and getting fatter.
Caterpillars are , sporting thin brown bands
across their middles, and they're moving fast.
Squirrels are laying in an extra supply of
acorns: ..
The bark on the trees is extra thick, and so
are the skins of onions. "When onion skins
am tough, the winter's rough."
You'd think the Rock brothers would have
something to say on the coming winter. But
there's no such luck. Norman just shakes his
head. "I'm not saying. That 's too far away to
tell."
So I'll have to grab onto their best of times
and wait for winter and the worst of times.
