THE BRUSSELS POST, OCTOBER 26 1977 —3
Amen
by Karl Schuessier
I'm for motherhood and homemade apple
pie. And when I say that, I know in today's
world, those two things aren't all that popular.
What with women wanting careers outside the
home and with supermarkets Selling pre-made
apple pies from their freezers.
And on top of that, I know motherhood and
apple pies are cliches -- cli ches for the simple
and'sweet things in life . Sugar and cream for
a vinegar world. And who _needs sweetness
and treacle in a battled and bittered world?
But as I heard Lou Grant say on his new
[mgr.= last night, what's, wrong with a
cliche? They're true, aren't they? What if
you do keep hearing the same expression over
and over again? They may not be original, but
the truth is there.
If I ever had to choose between a cliche and
some of those advertisements that think I
can't get the message the first time, I'll take a
cliche any time.
So I'll say it again. I'm for motherhood and
apple pie. I say this right after I read
Editor-on-Leave Sue White's Something to
Say in the newspaper. She may be sitting right
now in a lonely room with cradle and
typewriter, But let me tell you, after the
cradle's filled, she'll have lots more to say -
More than one typewriter can print.
YQu can pet a typewriter alright, but that's
nothing compared to having a baby in your
arms,
Now, I'm not saying every woman has to
choose between the two. If 'they're lucky, with
the right kind of husband, friends; family and
boss, they can have both. And. I hope that's'
what Sue can do.
But I still think having kids is what marriage
is all about. Call that old fashioned and trite.
Call that irresponsible in an overpopulated
world. Call that selfish in a starving and
hungry world. Call that unrewarding when all
the kids do is grow up and move away. Call it
anything, but I still believe it's kids that make
a marriage.
The Roman Catholics have it right on when
the marriage'.service mentions childreh about
three or four times in the ceremony.
When Genesis says Adam and Eve became
one flesh, the. interpretation of that line is up
for grabs. But a very valid one is the two
become one flesh in the child they lay in the
cradle.
I can hear all the nay sayers now. That's
selfish too--perpetuation of self. A quest for
immortality. An insurance for old age.
Maybe. But there takes a lot of giving in
raising children. It's a .school for discipline,
just as much for the parents as the child. You
think you have to raise the kids. But no
kidding, they bring you up too.
And if your own kids don't succeed at it,
then they can bring, along the grandchildren.
I'm still waiting to be brought up yet. ,I'm
waiting for my final finishing school. Every
time I see my married children, I always ask,
"Is there any pews? Do you have any
announcements to make?" '
They're not accommodating. They bring no
news. No good news. They're postponing
bring up father.
I hate to mention this to Sue. Now,ithat she
and her husband are all preoccupied with
nesting in number one.
.But there's another cliche that comes to
mind. Don't hit me. But what',s one, without
two?
