24—THE BRUSSELS POST, OCTOBER19, 1977
McCutcheons retire after 19 years
was Walton
WI theme
"Thanksgiving" was the theme
for the October meeting of the
Walton Unit, Wednesday
evening.
Mrs. Ian Wilbee read a poem
"Give Thanks Today" and
"Come, ye thankful people,
come" was sung accompanied by
Mrs. Wilbee. Scripture reading
from Psalm 103 verses 10 - 18 was
followed by prayer by Mrs.
Nelson Marks. Mrs. Wilbee
presented a reading "Let us think
as we celebrate
AND A POEM "What is Public
Worship" was read by Mrs.
Marks.
Mrs.Elarold Bolger discussed
several stories on Thanksgiving
carrying on the theme of the
meeting, opening with a poem
"Reasons for Thanksgving".
Should Thanksgiving Day be an
optional celebration,? she asked.
There has been a tendency in
recent years to confuse
thanksgiving with Thanksgiving
Day dinner, to replace the spirit
of the observance with the
symbols: A bountiful feast,
shared by a complement of
diners. But it is important for
each one of us to give thanks for
the blessings that make us truly
human. Let us give thanks for
beauty of all kinds, for music,
sunsets and clear streams, she
said. Le us give • thanks for open
smiles and firm handshakes and a
childs upstretched arms. Let us
give thanks for forgiveness and
fresh beginnings and for the
strength to endure. Let us give
thanks for health , for healing
hands and gentle words and
sharing, for mutual concern and
caring. .
She referred to the
"Traditional" holiday which has
been moved forward, set back
during its 350 year history in
North America. The celebration
of thank fulness finally was set as
a statutory holiday to the second
Monday in October in 1957.
The United ates proclaimed
Thanksgiving to be held on the
fourth Thursday in November in
1941.
