is fatal Silo gas
(By Alan W. Scott
Perth County Ag. Rep.)
Silo gas is more liable to occur
in a year like 1977 when there
have been fast growing conditions
and wet weather. These gases are
produced by the nitrates in the
stalks and leaves of corn or hay.
Gas production starts with the
ensiling process and continues for
at least two weeks.
Silage gases have a sickly
sweet odour and a colOurless or
yellowish brown colour. Since
they are heavier than air, they
will form just above the silage
surface or spill down the chute
and injure humans or livestock in
contained areas.
After exposure there is an
initial dizziness. However, the
real problems occur in 6 to 8
hours when the individual
experiences coughing, high
temperature, shortness of breath
and paralysis. Death or perma-
nent disability is a possibility.
If at all possible, it's best to
stay away from filled silos for at
least two weeks. Runiiing the
blower for 30 minutes will expel
some gas. This action does not
insure safety by any Means: The
gas could still collect behind a
closed door and spill down the
