Bugs can
control bugs
Biological insect control shows
bugs can be their own worst
enemies, says John Hughes,
Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food horticulturist.
Through biological bug control,
harmful insects can be regulated
by harmless insect predators or
parasites which feed on unwanted
pests.
"Biological bug control is a
natural, safe,alternative to pesti-
cide sprays, but it has enjoyed
only limited practical success."
One advantage of biological
insect control is that predators
eliminate only specific unwanted
pests, but leave valuable insects
.uch as ladybugs, dragonflies -
arid wasps.
One problem with biological
insect control is the need to
maintain sufficient predator
populations for ierm pest
control.
"People hesitate. co use
biological bug control because
some unwanted pests must
remain to maintain the
predators."
