GOOD PRIZES AT THE RACES — 81 years ago
horse racing- was profitable for those who won purses
at the Wingham Turf Club races. There were three
different purses of $300 each offered. That's
according to an old handbill, reproduced in part
above, which was found by Morray Bray of R.R.2,
Wroxefer in the door jam of his barn. On fairly thick
paper, the card advertises several Wingham
businesses of 1896, including Duffield and Son and
the Central Hotel and 5 cent cigars "Best on Earth".
The Post thanks Mr. and Mrs. Bray for loaning this
small piece of history.
