Blyth resident Keith Roulston
'has been fighting big government
on one editorial page or, another
ever since he started to write.
This week he t:z)ok his fight to
another platform.
The new platform is the stage
of the 13lyth Memorial Hall and
.the presentation is in the form of
a three dct play, "The Shortest
, Distance Between Two
Points' ' .
The publisher. of the 1313'r-th
Standard, the Rural Voice, the
Village Squire, and the Teeswater
News wrote the play oyer the last
two years.
The action is se t in the
mythical village of Elmtree which
finds itself in the path of assuper
highway being built to link up
I•Eghway 401 and the cottage
country of Bedford._ The
government has decided it's too
expensive to gO around the
municipality and proposes to pave
it over.
/Typical of many rural
communities, the residents of
Elmtree aren't about to accept the
government's decision sitting
down. They decide to fight.
Keith Roulston has, found
fighting big government on the
• reality of an editoriai page can
become frustrating. "You get the
feeling you are saying the same
thing in the same way. You start
to look for a different way of
saying, it and reaching different
people," he said: '
Mr. Roulston says his concern
over government's forcing
decisionSbn little -towns and rural
, people is not unique. "It's juk

that I've been stubborn• enough
and stupid. enough to write about
it more than other people have."
The play, "The Shortest
Distance Between Two Points",
is Mr. Roulston's first full length
play. After two years of writing
and revising the play . he feels
both "relieved and scared" to see
it go on stage.,
• "It's like being a father. I feel
like the mother ,has just been
wheeled off to the delivery room
and I'm waiting to see what
happenS," lie said.
"It was such a relief tO see
people moving on stage with the
thing. It's been on paper so long
you begin to4onder if you have
written a play or a novel:"
Blyth Centre for, the Arts
artistic director, James Roy says
the play is "sort of a comedy, but
not all of if is funny." It is a show
that shOuld do very well, he
thinks. ,
'It reflects the problems rural
people ate 'facing all the time.
Hopefully the play will bring it
together for them and give them
some insight," he said.
