It offers a well-balanced program of more than ; 25 exhibi- tions each year. Main thrust is in the field of Canadian art, and the Gallery is presently building a strong collection of works by prominent Canadian artists from the 19th century to the present day. The Gallery's European collection includes a group of Gothic and Renaissance panel printings, a collection of master prints and drawings dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries, a small but impressive selection of modern European paintings and several pieces of modern European sculpture. The Gallery also houses one of the largest collections of Inuit (Eskimo) art in the world, including close to 200 pieces of contemporary sylpture illustrat- ing the everyday activities of Eskimo life. A full schedule of public programs embraces all forms of art, including concerts, plays, poetry readings and films. Winnipeg's vast ethnic mosaic has fostered a variety of public events at the Gallery, presented by Chinese, Icelandic, Polish, ,Scottish, West Indian and native Canadian groups.
