When Jamps. Watt and his
friends were developing the
steam engine, horses were used ,
to drive various machines in the
country. It was Watt's intention.
to replace these horses with his
engines: and' as a basis for
comparison, he determined the
rate at which an average horse.
worked. How many fOot-pounds
of work could the average horse
do in one minute?
Work is 'force times distanced
power is the rate of doing work,
To condUct this experiment,
Watt chose a brewer's dray horse
and allowed the horse to pull a
100,poi.indweight out of a deep
mine shaft by means of a rope
passing over a pulleys The
100-pound-weight was the force,
and by measuring the time for the
horse to go through a measured
distance, he established that the
horse could pull the weight up the
shaft at a speed of 220 feet per
minute. So the horse was doing
220 x 100 or 22,000 foot-pounds of
work per minute. Watt increased
this by 50 percent so that he
would be on the safe side in his
calculations relating to his
engines. He therefore used the
figure of 33,000 foot-pounds per
minute as the basis of his
calculations. This number has
been accepted as the standard
unit of power and is termed a
horsepower.
In today's metric system of
calculation, we would use metres
for distance, newtons for force,
and power in units of watts or
kilowatts. A pound is equal to
4,44 newtons.
