London, Ontario. Holding cattle for better markets sounds like a good idea. Some of the results are predict- - able while other are not.The animals themselves will usually continue to grow if fed a similar ration, Heavier animals have a highdaily maintenance. 'requirement, and the remaining nutrients are used to promote weight gain. Reduced rates of gain and low-feed efficiency are noted unless the nutrient content of the ration iS increased. Composition of weight gain change as animals continue to grow. In rapidly fattening animals, the rate of gain and the conversion of feedstuffs into gain are i•(clueed because the gain is in the form fat. Fat contains a high of energy and it takes as much energy Ind of fat than a • le. rte of gain can be I. ures that Research 1,1,. I Jniversity of 1)1,t.. been adjusted for curl, ni t•(•Qd prices. The feed cost. to put an additional hundred pounds of gain on a 1000-pound steer calf or a 1140-pound yearling Works out to about $52 per hundredweight. Adding the other variables such as interest, bedding and capital costs, brings the total cost to about $64 per Brussels more ' put hundredweight, If the animal is held on feed on extra 3 to 4 weeks, the increase in weight may, be 50 pounds at a cost of $32. While these cattle are being held, the price may do one of three things. It may remain the same, drop, or increase, If we consider a 1000-pound steer priced, at 40c per pound,w e can determine the effect of market price after it has been held for an extra 50 pounds. Original value of the steer was 40c x 1000 pounds - $400, Situation 1 - Price stays at 40c, per pound. Value of steer is 40c x 1050 pounds - $420. Increase of $20 in value less $32 cost of gain results in a $12 reduction in return per head. Situation 2 Price rises to 43c per pound. Value of steer is 43c x 1050 pounds - $451.50. Increase Of $51.50 in value less $32 cost results in an increase of $19.50 per head. Situation 3 - Price drops to 37c per pound. Value of steer is 37c x 1050 poundS - $388.50. Loss of -$11,50 on the weight plus $32 cost of gain. A total loss of $43.50 per head. An increased feeding period may result in sufficient fat deposition to raise the fat level of the animal's carcass when graded. If we assume .a price spread of $5 per hundredweight bets. eenA2 and A3 carcasses, the liveweight differential may be ini:. the area of $2.50 per. hundred- . weight.
