HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Brussels Post, 1977-07-27, Page 8Tournament this weekend The weekend of July 29 to August 1, the focus of Blyth's centennial celebrations, will not see the theatre unrepresented. The Festival is planning several performances over the weekend, including a play written especially for the centennial, an open house and a fund-raising radio-a-thon. The radio-a-thon, a first for the theatre, has been organized in an attempt to cover this season's deficit and to gather funds for capital expenditures, such as air-conditioning for the theatre. Jim Swann of CKNX Radio will host the event throughout the day on Saturday, July 30th. Visitors to Blyth as well "Is those native to the town will be able to get a closer look at the operations of the theatare that weekend, as tours of the theatre At Ripley Craft Show Plans are being finalized for the Annual Craft Show and Sale which will be presented by Huron-Bruce Arts and Crafts Incorporated in Ripley-Huron Community Centre in Ripley on Friday, July 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 9 P.M. and on Saturday, July 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The conveners, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver McCh arles and their committee have obtained a lar ge group of craf ters with a varied and interesting array of crafts where there will be something of Bevan Elliott, who was a patient in Wingham and District Hospital, came home last week. Mr.- and Mrs. Jack McCutcheon were visitors with relatives in Orillia on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Martin visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McPherson of Teeswater. Dr. and Mrs. L.M. Grose of Toronto and Dr. and Mrs. Fraser Strachan of Sun City, Arizona, were in Brussels on Monday. They called on relatives and renewed old friendships, Mrs. Grose and Dr. Strachan are former Brussels residents. Mr. and Mrs. David Kennedy and sons, Michael and Mark, Of Hamilton, spent a couple of hours with Mr. and Mrs. R,W. Kennedy on Saturday. Mrs. Wm. And, of course,' regular performances will continue on the stage of the Blyth Memorial Hall. Five performances are planned, including both matinee and evening performances of The Blyth. Memorial History show. The Blyth Memorial History Show is a celebration in word and song of the history of Bly th from 1633 to the present. It was written especially for the Blyth Centennial by Jim Schaefer, resident actor, director and playwright with the Festival. Antiques and many crafts such as crocheting, china painting, oil painting, wood products, quilts, ceramics, various types of jewellery, rugs, pottery, leather, dried flower arrangements, apple head dolls, Japanese embroidery, perfume, silk screening, clay animals, Bruce County Tartan, coppercraft, paper tole, -macrame and many more will be for sale by ' crafters from across Ontario. There will also be demonstrations - of some crafts. The Seventh annual Brussels Invitational Mens Softball Tournament will once again be held on Friday, July 29, Saturday, July 30, Simday, July 31 and Monday August 1; There was such a good response when the applications were sent out that it is expanded this year. Some of the games will be played at the Walton Ball Park. There should be some real good ball games, and anyone wishing to donate money for Home Runs please call 887-6983 or 887-6971. ' Jim Schaefer, who is familiar to Festival patrons as actor, director 'and playwright, has written the play to coincide with the celebra- tion of Blyth's centennial celebra- tions. Special matinee and evening performances will be given throughout the centennial weekend, July 29th to August 1. Theplay takes the history of Blyth from its roots in 1633 through its settlement, incorporation • and growth to the modern day.
