A Summer Burning, playing at,
the Blyth Summer Festival, is
well worth the time and the ticket
price.
The play, which opened the
third annual Blyth Summer
Festival season, is an adaptation
of the novel of the same name by
Huron County native, Harry J.
Boyle. '
The musical drama set in 1927
Huron. County is a perceptive
statement about rural prejudices
and values.
The poignant and often comical
story is based around a farm.
Ann Arbour, Mich; were in
Brussels this week with their
wives. The ladies, whise maiden
names were , Taylor, were here
seeking information concerning
their ancestors whose roots were
in this area of Huron County.
family's. decision to take In a
Toronto slum kid for the summer.
The inevitable , collision between
the two 'worlds arid the effect
each is a revealing study of
human nature.
Jack Blum gives an impressive
performance as the young .
hoodlum plunged into an alien
environment where his street
values no longer hold.
An equally strong performance
is given by Jim Schaefer who
plays the role of the tolerant, but
at times stern, father. The deeply
religious and loving mother,
trying to raise, her son the "right"
way, is played by Angela Gei.
The comic and charming dirty
old man of the show is Ron Barry,
playing the, part of Grampa
Murphy. His quick one-liners
keep the play moving and light
throughout the lengthy first •a:ct.
Richard Prevett is credible as
the frustrated and awkward farm
boy on the verge of manhood.
'Of particular note is the country
kitchen set by Shawn Kerwin,
exact down to the last detail.
'The music scattered
throughout the play is well
co-ordinated with the mood and
plot. In most cases, the lyrics
compliment the main theme of
the play.
A Summer Burning will be
featured once more in July and
six times in August.
