The Brussels Post, 1977-07-20, Page 5THE BRUSSELS POST, JULY 20, 1977 MRS. BROADFOOT IS 90 — After all the hard work she put into it, she doesn't feel much like smiling when she looks at the Triple Irish. Chain quilt she completed in her 90th year , Jean Broadfoot joked with the photographer. Mrs. Broadfoot, of Walton, quilts and knits in the wintertime but likes to spend her summers in the garden. She'll be 90 on Sunday. (Expositor Photo) Liberal one and jokes that she couldn't see much difference in the two parties although there was always lots of teasing about politics. Mr. and Mrs. Broadfoot farmed a mile and a guar, ter north of Walton and moved to what had been her parents house in Walton when they retired, and sold the farm. Intersted in travel, Mrs. Broadfoot has been to the west coast four times, including a trip to Vancouver by train alone when she was over eighty. She and Mr. Broadfoot also travelled to the Maritimes. She'd like to have seen the rest of the world, "because you can learn so much" but follows other people's travels avidly. Once she wrote to a relative who had invited her out west that Newton had discovered the law of gravity in his own orchard. Her - relative wrote back that if Christopher Columbus had stayed in his own orchard we'd all be in a fix because he wouldn't have discoverd America, There wasn't much she could say to that, Mrs. Broadfoot laughs. But there is a lot to see of the "wonders of creation" in 'our own backyards, Mrs. Broadfoot Says and talks about a recent drive around Huron County that she enjoyed with a nephew. "Wherever you go, there are nice people and good neighbours" she says. Write letters She's kept a daily diary since she was a girl and loves to write letters. "I should have • A secretary", she jokes about the letters she'd like to write. She's a 'UCW member who contributes to the group but no longer attendi meetings. Mrs. Broadfoot loves to read and a neighbour who is a school librarian "keeps me well supplied". Nearly 90 or not, life is never dull when you've got a spirit like Mrs. Broadfoot has., At Christmastime she makes shortbread for herself and her neighbours. She recently finished a triple Irish chain quilt top "begun in my 89th year and finished in my 90th, which a neighbour quilted for her. And this, week she's busy getting ready for a group of friends and relatives who are coming for dinner on Saturday. 11 The calendar says that Jean Broadfoot of Walton is going to be 90 on Sunday, but the spry, good-humoured lady looks and acts like she's 75. Mrs, Broadfoot, who has lived all her life in the Walton and Kinburn area lives alone, does all her own housework and keeps a lovely garden that a 25 year old would be proud of. She's the eldest of ten children, hree boys and seven girls, who were born to the late Joseph and Alexandria McDougall Love in 'Grey Township. Five of the ten are still living, including her youngest sister, Miss Amy Love of Toronto, who is visiting her this week and Mrs. Ferne Patterson of Seaforth. Mrs. Broadfoot, who is in good health except for a slight hearing problem, had her first experience in hospital when, she was 75. "I vas never very much for medicine", she says and attributes her healthy old age at least partly to keeping regular hours. She tries to be in bed by ten each night and gets up at 6:45. "I'm blessed with being a good sleeper. I was raised on a farm and stilllike my noon dinner, with supper at night," Mrs. Broadfoot, who's been a widow for 14 years :says.
