THE BRUSSELS POST, JULY 13, 1977 —5
Will you, sink or swim this year?
Summer is upon us. And as the
days en gtlletl and trees burst into
leaf, temperatures rise and
Canadians head for the .lakes,
Water sports are Canada's
summer pastime, particularly 'in
Ontario with its thousands of
lakes,- It comes, then, as
something of a shock to learn
from Ontario's Ministry of
Cilture and Recreation that some
GO per cent of Canadians can't
swim , And of the 40 per cent who„
presumably then can swim, most
don't know what to do in an
emergency.
The Red Cross offers water
safety programs aimed specific-
ally at these duffers - and at the
Smiles
A man rang a couple's doorbell -
and said he was collecting money
fora poor lady down the block. He
advised that she was to be evicted
because she owed three month's
rent.
"How nice of you to be
interested in this poor woman,"
they said. "Are you her pastor?"
"No," he replied. "I'm her
landlord."
A wife opened the window and
asked, "Is that too drafty for you,
darling?"
"No, it's okay," replied her
husband.
"I wasn't talking to you," she
said, "I was talking to my •
climbing plant."

Cold Water Survival
The depth and size of some of
our lakes .means that many' don't
warm up a great deal, even
during summer. Only the top few
inches of water are heated by the
sun, but currents keep the bulk of
water very cold. And warm, air in
early summer is no guat•antee of
warm water, as any serious: sailor
will confirm.. '
Immersion in cold water poses
a danger greater than drowning.
Hypothermia is the technical
term for a reduction. in body
temperature caused by extended
exposure to temperatures below
10°C, Reactions include violent
Shivering, stiffening, loss of
co-ordination, dulled . perception
and slurred speech,' Eventually
drowsiness and unconsciousness
result, . terminating in heart'
stoppage if body temperature
drops below 30°C (normal is
37°C),
Techniques developed in the
Red Cross Cold 'W'atet' Survival
program can help slow the onset
of hypothermia by use of heat-
retaining positions.
.Tips for water lovers
So. while water can be fun, it
holds dangers for the unwary.
The Red Cross Water Safety
Serviee;suggests that everyone,
whether water-sporting or just
watching, should know — and be
able to act on --- these tips.
1. Learn to swim.
Learn rescue breathing tech-
niques.
3. Wear a personal flotation.
device (PFD; when boating or
working around water,
4. Keep careful watch on small.
children around water even
the backyard pool.
5. Be sure your backyard pool is
safe. Do you have a ring buoy or
substitute around, to throw to
someone in difficulty?
6. Check lakes for submerged
debris, strong currents and
other hazards before swim-
ming or boating.
7. Learn to handle your small
craft properly. Courses and
instruction books are readily
available.
8. Don't mix' alcohol and water
Remember, water is not our
natural element. Treat it with
respect. Courses from the Red
Cross cover safety techniques for
many of the tips above, and cost
little. Contact your local Red
Cross branch , for further
information. You can learn to
save a life this summer.
