Sulfur is
needed
in small
amounts
Sulfur is an essential part of
every plant and animal cell.
However, it is required by most
crops in only relatively small
amounts.
For example. Michigan Slate
University reports that 150
bushels of grain corn contain only
10 pounds of total sulfur, 40
bushels of soybeans only .fo
pounds and 60 bushels of winter
wheat only live pounds of total
sulfur.
It is unlikely that most crops
will benefit from the application
of sulfur fertilizers, because their
sulfur requirements arc amply
supplied by many other sources.
The Ontario Ministry of
Environment reports that an
average collection of dust falling
from the air in Southwestern
Ontario contains 11 percent
sulfate materials. This provides a
yearly application of 18 pounds of
sulfur per acre - more than
enough to replace the sulfur ,
removed by 4 tons of alfalfa, 150
bushel of grain corn or 60 bushels
of winter wheat.
In addition, sulfur may be
.tdded to the soil because it is
found in phosphate fertilizers and
iii ni artUre.For example. 20 tons
of hog manure contains up to 54
pounds of sulfur. Other manures
contain only slightly less,
At the present time it is
unlikely that sulfur fertilizers
such as cpsoni salts; gypsum or
elemental sulfur will be beneficial
to crops itt soutwesteett Ontatiao:
