worn washcloths, towels, pot
holders and dish cloths. They, can,
be used until soiled and then
thrown away, saves packing wet
or badly soiled articles for the
return trip.
• Be sure to take along plenty of
plastic clothespins since they
have many uses. They fasten the
ground cloth to the underside of
the tent. They clip road maps
together or clip them open at the
right places. Clip paper napkins
together or clip them on the picnic
table and clip a handkerchief to
the car aerial, so it is easily
spoted in a parking area. Of
course, they are always needed
'for hanging wet things.
Plan and prepare at home the
first meal to be eaten out. Store it
in your portable ice chest and
vacuum bottle and be on your
way. While the tent is being
raised and camp prepared, dinner
is, quickly completed and served.
Make a lot of cookies ahead and
store them in tins. Bake your
favourite cake that can be eaten
as is, or served later with pudding
or a sauce or ice-cream topping.,
• Make your children
responsible for looking after
their own ‘belongings. Make
each child a toilet kit out of an old
shower curtain. Stitched by
sections for hair brush, soap,
toothbrush and comb. A cloth bag
for each family member holds a
pair of pajamas, towel,thongs, a
short beach coat and the toilet
kit. Beach coats are easily made
from old knitted slipcovers and
can be used over swimming suits
and going to and from the
shower.
Be a good camper and protect
the trees you shade under. Don't
drive nails into trees for hanging
one's equipment , it's a
thoughtless practice. To avoid
this, punchy extra holes in a
man's old leather belt ('.the larger
the better) and buckle it around..
the tree trunk. Pegboard hooks
inserted in the holes provide
hanging space for camping gear.
• Wornout heavy socks can be
used to keep glass jars of food
from breaking on one's travels,
Cut them into pieces and make
jackets to stretch around the glass
jars and all will arrive at your
camping destination intact.

on trailer
towing
• Handling, steering,
braking, accelerating and
riding of your vehicle are
altered when towing. In-
ternational Scout recom-
mends that before head-
ing out, practice operating
your tow vehicle/trailer
combination near home.
• Stopping distances
are increased with a trail-
er, Begip to brake well in
advance,
• Use the engine to pro- ,
vide braking assistance by
shifting to a lower gear
when descending grades.
• MOre room is needed
for your combination to
pass other vehicles safely.
• Since you are driving
a slower, more cumber-
some vehicle,, be sure to
be particularly courteous
in your driving.
• Don't try to maintain
high road speeds; road
grade, rolling resistance
and air turbulence all put
increased horsepower re-
quirements on your ve-
hicle.
• On hot summer days,
climbing grades may in-,
crease water temperature
levels. Minimize overheat-
ing by downshifting to a
lower gear.
• The trailer should be
carefully loaded. If pos-
sible, place 10 per cent of
the total trailer weight on
the trailer hitch. Ideally,
the load should be balanc-ed left to right.

• Cheek trailer rakes
and lights for good work
ing order and proper con-
nection before stalling
out on the road.
• Avoid "jackrabbit"
starts and "crash" stops.
Always start slowly and in low gear.
• Backing a trailer
properly takes practice, A
simple method of backing into the spot you want is
to turn the wheel in the
diredion opposite to the
way you want the rear of the trailer to tnrri.
A trailer 2,000 WS, or less can be safely towed and stepped by any model Scout, It does not need an
independent brake 'system.
A trailer 2,000 ibs, and !.10 must have its own
brake System. Since the
trailer often weighs as
much as the towing vehi-
dat cle, power brakes are Man- orY.
