This is suggested as being the form which the
commemorative memorial to be erected in the foyer
of the new arena may take. Suggested wording on
the memorial is "This memorial is dedicated to the
memory of those people who in the past gave of
themselves for the good of the Brussels area and in
appreciation to those who by their contributions in
their memory have helped make this Community
Centre possible."
Commemorative memorial
Planned for arena
The memory of past residents of Brussels and area
will be commemorated in the new arena.
As construction advances and the arena begins to
take shape a committee headed by Jack Bryans and
including Vera Hastings, Gerald! Gibson and Herb
Stretton has been busy working out details of a proposal
whereby relatives, friends or organizations, through a
gift to the Arena fund, may perpetuate the memory of
those who vdere dear to them or who, in the case of an
organization, have earned recognition by their
contribution in years past.
In a statement issued this week the committee
explains the proposal.
"In the planning of our new community centre it has
been apparent to the committee that many who would
have been all for the project are no longer with us to
contribute. In faCt, in many cases family names that
once. were common to the Brussels' area have
disappeared or all but disappeared from our midst..In
reality, these people were the backbone of the Brussels
area in the past. They are the human portion of our
heritage.
"So the committee thinks it fitting to place a
commemorative memorial in the foyer.of the new centre
in memory of these people for all time. We believe that
had they been present they would have given gladly.
Now we are giving their families, or others dear to
them, an opportunity to give on their behalf.
"This will be the only memorial in the' community
where all such names will be recorded collectively.
That this should be done in the community's newest ,
lamest and finest centre seems to be most appropriate,'
"The fact that the Brussels area has been changing
rapidly in recent years seems to add increased
importance to this thought.
"The nneniorial will feature a book where the names
of ail who have donated "In Memoriam" will be
recorded: Asp all donations are tax deductible, a proper
receipt will 12e issued to each donor.
"A gift of five hundred dollars entitles the donor to
select a nathe to be placed in the memorial. At the same
time the committee would be most thankful for any
larger amount. Any party or parties who have already
donated the required sum are entitled to request a
name on the memorial. In order to place a name on the
memorial, donations already made may be added to.
They may also be grouped or pledged in any manner.
"So far the committee has been busy writing and
contacting people who have left the area. Very few
people in the area have been approached as yet in this
regard.
"To date, some three dozen names have been
confirmed. There are a great many more names that
deserve recognition; past professional men, business
men,. farmers, tradesmen and labourers and of course
their helpmates. Most were plain ordinary good
citizens. They all had their dreams, they did their
work, they lived their lives and they left their mark.
They moulded our community into what it is today.
"The committee invites inquiries from those who
wish to participate in the project. It also invites
suggestions regarding people who should be contacted
in this matter and will be most thankful to any who
would volunteer to assist with the program.
"The committee would like to stress that this is to be
an on-going and continuing program. Consequently the'
design on the memorial is such that names may be
added at any . time."
The commemorative ,memorial is not to be confused
with a plaque which is to be erected and which will list
the names of all major contributors to the project. A
major contributor will be an individual, organization or
firm who has donated $1000 or more and can be in the
form of cash, labour or equipment.
Anyone who has already submitted their donation
but wishes to increase the amount in, order to qualify for
co recognition on the plaque may do so. Since the plaque
recognizes major gifts to the bUilding project, it will
acknoWledge only those major contributions which have
been received prior to the completion of the building.
Further information or questions regarding the
plaque for major contributors may be obtained from
Frank Stretton or Jim Prior.
