Machinery must meet farm .needs By Ron Shaw In a letter to George Kerr, Minister of the Environment, the Executive and Directors of the Perth County Federation say they "strongly object", to the dumping of sewage into the Boyle Drain. They term the dumping a "seemingly inexcusable action of the Ministry", and addthey hope "our Minister of the Environment would explain why this could not have been drained off earlier." The Federation also notes that farmers in the area would like to get some word on how soon the Ministry intends to clean "this mess out of their properties." The letter to Kerr was written following a meeting of the Federation on May 26 at which the directors voted unanimously to contact the Minister regarding the dumping of partially evaporated sewage from the lagoon at Milverton. The dumping, they say, has resulted in the Boyle Drain being totally polluted and the affected farmers having to go to great lengths to keep cattle away from the stream, fish dying and odour being bad in the area. The letter also notes that the Perth Federation of Agriculture has set up a committee to inform people of their rights and how to go about keeping track of extra expenses incurred and how to collect on these expenses. According to Federation President Ken Green, the big Ontario farmers for years now, "have been saying that these sewage lagoons are not the way to store or treat sewage. And we in Perth County have seen cases, such as the Listowel lagoon, of pollution caused by them." Other towns have built sewage treatment plants, Green says, the Ministry should not approve anything else, and more study has to be done to improve even those." The letter goes on to ask Kerr if he can guarantee that "mistakes like this won't happen again?" "We feel farmers, taxpayers and even the fish would like to be protected better than they are at present. One official explained to a resident of Elma Township, that the lagoon would have to be lowered by means of . spraying some of the contents on nearby fields but even this sytem may not be desirable during a dry spell of weather. Noting that the Ministry of the Environment has an obligation to "relieve the anxiety of these people by informing them of any plans for aleviating the condit- ion," the letter invites Kerr to send a member of his staff to a Federation of Agriculture meeting planned for. "Whether you are buying new or used farm machinery, it is necessary to consider your needs," says John Kessler, secretary-manager of the Farm M achinery Board of Ontario. While used equipment is workable for many small - to medium-sized farm operations, it may not meet the dependability standards necessary for an efficient management operation. "In large farm operations, where each piece of equipment is part of a total management system, the downtime experienced with used equipment is too costly." But used equipment is practical for smaller operations where large and costly pieces of equipment are not necessary to get the work done,Because used equipment usually requires more frequent servicing, Mr. Kessler suggests buying from a convenient and reliable dealer. "Farmers buying used equipment should also remember that manufacturers' guarant ees are not transferable from the first owner' to...die second." Some dealers offer warranties for used equipment, but this is a warranty between the purchaser and the dealer. "If you are offered a warranty by the dealer, make sure you get it in writing," says Mr. Kessler. If the equipment is sold without a warranty, the bill should state "Sold As Is.": 14—THE BRUSSELS POST, JUNE 8, 1977 Perth Federation object to dumping Used equipment should be checked to make sure all safety-related equipment, such as shields and guards, are in place.
