This procedure will reduce the entry into the barns of infectious agents to which the herd has not had exposure. Operating a closed herd, along with a purposeful exposure to fecal material and close contact between gilts, sows and boars in the. barns will allow a common bacterial and viral population , to build up cn the adult pigs. As a result, antibodies will be produced which in' turn will protect unborn and newborn pigs from the effects ofi various infectious agents. Pork producers can readily use a naturally , occurring body defense mechanism, combined with good diets and good management; to achieve a high degree of good health in their swine herds. (By Dr. P.G.Oliver, Swine Diseases Consultant, Ont. Min- istry of Agriculture and Food) Antibody plays an important role in maintaining good health of animals, and preventing diseases from being establ ished. It is part of the defense system that animals have against infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses. What is antibody? Antibody. also called gammaglobulin *or immunoglubulin, is a specific protein found in plasma. Whet foreign agents such as bacteria and viruses enter an animal's body, its immune response system is activated and an attempt to neutralize tile leffect of foreign agents commences - an antidote is created part of that response is the production of antibody. The foreign agent i the antigen, the antidote is called antibody. Once antibody is formed in sufficient quantity, the.', animal then may be able to resist and-or overcome the harmful agents; it is immune to the diseases and conditions that', the! foreign agents cause. The ability of animals to i develop an immune response to infectious agents can be used very effectively in swine open ations. Antibody is present in high levels in colostrum an,; significant levels in milk. Piglets consuming adequate amounts o:' these products will also receivc. antibody - this is called passive immunity. Pork producers must make certain piglets receive colostrum and that sows have a good supply of milk. Certain diseases occurring in • pigs will cause the production of antibody and a subsequent immunity, for example - TGE; viruses affecting a female's reproductive perfornance and bacterial diseases, such as leptospirosis: This process is called active irtimtinity. The use of vaccines can accomplish the same thing. There are vaccines available to control E: coil infections, leptospirosis, erysipelas, etc. One of the Most effective management techniques that pork producers can adop is the , J.E.
