Whereas many students are in need of summer
employment, and whereas the present and future
welfare of our community depends upon -the
constructive utilization of the energies of our young
people, the week of June 13 to 18 is proclaimed "HIRE
A STUDENT WEEK" in Brussels. All members of the
community are called upon to assist our young citizens
in their search for useful summer activities, and to offer
employment to students whenever possible during the
summer months. Signed: J. Calvin Krauter

When selecting a coating Dr.
Jofriet says factors other than
durability should be taken into
consideration.
"The most important factor is
the cost, which may be as high as
50 cents per square foot. The cost
should be amortized over the
expected life of the coating."
Another important
consideration is ease of
application. While some coatings
require sophisticated equipment
and specialized applicators,
others can be applied by the
owner himself.

Producers can extend the life of
silos with protective coatings to
prevent corrosion', says. Dr. J. C.
Jofriet, an agricultural engineer
at the Ontario agricultural
College in Guelph.
After testing a variety of
alternatives, research results
showed epoxy, liquid urethane
resin and butyl elastomer
coatings, effectively prevented
acidic silage juices from corroding
conrete silos. The coatings, which
are applied to the inside of the
silo, prevent lactic and 'acetic
acid.es present in: silage from
penetrating the Portland 'cement
concrete.
Dr. Jofriet recommends that
producers who install new silos
coat at least the bottom third of
the silo, to prevent preMature
corrosion. A coating can be
applied to an older silo, however,

Huron County Council gave its
od to $161,125 in renovations to
the exterior of the Huron Historic
Jail in Goderich when they met
ast Thursday. ,. • • •
The approval was ',little more
than a formal go-ahead as the.
County will not be paying for any
of the work to be undertaken but
had been asked for their approval
because they are still the owners
of the structure.
Property Committee Chairman
John Jewitt told the Meeting that
representatives of the Historic,
Jail. Board met with the
Committee to discuss the study
and report prepared by Nick Hill,
entitled "A Plan for
Restoration."
That report was completed for
the Jail Board at a cost of $2,000,
to enable a comprehensive and
concerted .approach to the
Province and other charities for
funds to complete the restoration.
Only the exterior renovation
phase has been given the
go-ahead. Interior restorations
valued at $99,765, and a theatre
complex valued at $388,500 were
"away in the future if ever,"
according. to Bayfield Reeve Ed
Oddleifson who is also the Jail
Board secretary.
Property Committee Chairman
Jewatt said -the other restorations
were ,`pie in the sky."
Oddleifs‘on told the councillors
that just because the Board was
not asking the County for funds
now did not mean they might not
make such a request at some
future time.
