money to
relief
(Continued from Page 1)
Councillor 'Pletch told the Post
that he sought legal advice before
making the motion. that the clerk
reaign. He said too. many things
were being left undone that was
costing the village money.
"It was not a nice thing to do
but there's no way we could let
that go on and not do anything.
We took an oath and had to take a.
stand," councillor Pletch said,
Businesslike
He said Council- had made
every effort but. the former clerk
would join in discussion at council
meetings and not write things
down. "Things have to be done
in a businesslike manner", he
said "He told us he had two
month's backlog (when the
present council took office)",
councillor P fetch said, "but he
didn't tell us he had five years.
back log."
The press and the clerk were
excluded from Monday night's
meeting because council wanted
to discuss the duties of a clerk,
Councillor Pletch said.
The former clerk's letter of/
resignation, dated Thursday,
May 5. and read to council by the
reeve reads:
"In response to y our resolution.
of Monday night, requesting my
dismissal, I hereby submit my
resignation.
Although I find it difficult to
believe that I have been guilty of .
a very-serious error by sh owing
my compassion for a fellow
worker, I realize that to continue
without the support of a stable
council' would be impossible,"
.Yours very truly,
William H, King."
Reeve Krauter said he hadn't
checked with a lawyer on the
legality of council's motion, which
was made in private, without a
vote to go into committee of the
whole, and was not reported back
to a full council session until.
Thursday' night's meeting. he
said the provincial ministry of
Treasury, Economics -and Inter-
governmental Affairs told him
council needs to adopt a wider
procedural. bylaw than the one
that is presently in force.
Five Reeves
Former clerk'King had served
under five reeves, and "suddenly
he's no damn good", Reeve
Krauter commented.
Mr. King, a native of Brussels,
told the Post that he has no firm
plans but will be staying in
Brussels for the time being.
Councillor' Pletch said that
according to advice that he got
from the Employment Standards
Branch of the Provincial
Department of Labour, council
does. not have to pay the former
clerk severance pay, because he
resigned.
